Reporting the success of a spay neuter program via Facebook is a pretty tough gig

These are not posts that will ever go viral or have people rushing to crowdfund , share or even like !

It is however the back bone of our work here in Negombo so I am going to risk it and share what I think its great news for animal welfare here in Sri Lanka

Since March this year we have sterilised 1094 dogs ( and 84 cats ) across 23 zones

An area ( or zone ) needs a minimum of 70 % of dogs sterilised in order to reach population stabilisation and then to decrease. Any less and the remaining dogs can breed to fill the spaces !

we regularly resurvey the zones to monitor and assess so we can plan the following months work streams , we use the same GPS technology on smart phone from that we used during the mass vaccination program in Jan / Feb

In July we reached over 70 % in two zones around the fish market area which is amazing news

We are planing to sterilise another 2000 animals before our stage one program is completed by the end of January 2016 and we are already planning stage 2 including another mass vaccination drive and dog population survey plus more lots more spay / neuter programs.

Great news for welfare and thats always more important than being exciting on Facebook

although I wish we could be both !!!!
