This year, our school established an award to recognize the graduate who produced the most outstanding Applied Practice Experience (APE). The APE is a requirement completed by all MPH students, where students develop and direct their own projects with a partner community organization. It is an integral component of professional training in public health, requiring students to take the lead on a project under the supervision of a professional in the field, toward the fulfilment of their project goals.

This year’s inaugural recipient, Alexis Grasso, worked with the Waco McClennan County Public Health District to develop a Standard Operating Guide to test the use and effectiveness of artificial intelligence, or A.I., in public health messaging. As A.I. has become widely accessible, the primary need for organizations such as health departments is to understand its benefits and limitations in facilitating public health communications. This project demonstrated innovative application of public health tools and concepts toward the development of a protocol to help the health district better understand how to use A.I. effectively.

Congratulations, Alexis!

Happy Star Wars Day, space travelers!

As we zip around the galaxy in our trusty starships, let's not forget the importance of safety, especially when it comes to our little Padawans and younglings. Here's a reminder about using car seats in our Star Wars vehicles:

1. Millennium Falcon tip: Strap your younglings into their booster seats before hitting hyperspace! Safety belts are a must, even when outrunning TIE fighters.

2. X-wing safety protocol: Ensure your child is securely fastened in their car seat before engaging in any daring dogfights. After all, we don't want any mid-flight ejections!

3. Speeder bike wisdom: Whether cruising through Endor's forests or Coruscant's cityscape, make sure your young Jedi is snug in their car seat. The Force can't protect against unexpected bumps and turns.

4. AT-AT advice: Even in the colossal walker, safety is paramount! Secure your little ones in their car seats to prevent any unforeseen tumbles during battle.

Remember, no matter how fast or far we travel, the safety of our younglings comes first. May the Force (and proper car seat usage) be with you!

Last month, a group of nursing and public health students and faculty (several from the Abilene campus) visited Panama as part of an interprofessional global health trip. They collaborated with the non-profit Global Brigades in its mission to empower communities through a holistic approach to health and well-being.

Anything interesting happening today?

We're KIDDING. Today is super unique. Along with wearing special glasses, here are some tips to protect yourself if you are in the path of today's solar eclipse:

Wear sunscreen with a high SPF and broad-spectrum protection. Reapply it every two hours, or more often if you sweat or get wet.

Wear a hat that covers your head, face, ears and neck. A wide-brimmed hat is ideal, as it can also shield your eyes from the sun.

Wear protective clothing that covers your arms and legs. Choose light-colored, loose-fitting and breathable fabrics that can keep you cool and comfortable.

Seek shade whenever possible, especially during the peak hours of the sun’s intensity (between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.).

Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, and avoid heat exhaustion or heatstroke.

Have fun and stay safe out there!
