Let's dance! Belly dance has its origins in Egypt and is known in Arabic as raks sharki, or “dance of the East.” Belly dance was originally an informal social dance performed at gatherings and celebrations. We will look at the history of the dance form from its origins to modern day, as well as break down the basic hip and torso isolations for which it's known. The course concludes with a short performance by the instructor and an invitation for students to try some of the movements.

Liora is a professional belly dancer, local instructor in Austin, and a longtime performer with the Hands of Fatima at Sherwood Forest Faire in Paige, Texas.

Did someone say book club? Sign me up! Kate Bowman temporarily moves to her grandmother's Missouri farm with her husband and baby son. The family has given Kate the job of convincing Grandma Rose, who's become increasingly stubborn and forgetful, to move off her beloved land and into a nursing home. But Kate knows such a change would break her grandmother's heart. Just when Kate despairs of finding answers, she discovers her grandma's journal. A beautiful handmade notebook full of stories that celebrate the importance of family, friendship, and faith that make Kate see her life – and her grandmother – in a completely new way.

Barbara Shaw coordinates the summer reading program at the Anson Public Library.
