Congratulations to the ACU local chapter of SIGCHI (Special Interest Group in Computer-Human Interaction) members for winning the STEM Top Scholars competition at the ACU Undergraduate Research Festival. The students conducted a study to measure the impact of adding real-time feedback from ChatGPT on student programming homework submissions. Their research was also accepted to the premier international research conference, CHI 2024, where they will present their research at the conference in Hawaii this May. There, they will compete in the student research competition against big R1 schools both from the U.S. and internationally. Members of this team are: Bailey Kimmel, Lily Yaro, Austin Geisert, Taylor Hotchkiss, Brendan Gipson, Chase Yamaguchi, Hunter Vaught, Grant Wininger and Sidney Osae-Asante.

Junior computer science major, Fabrice Mpozenzi, spent his summer internship working for JP Morgan Chase in Wilmington, Delaware, where he had the opportunity to get in on the ground floor of working on the front end and back end of web applications and other projects meant to further his understanding of the business. Mpozenzi’s internship fueled his desire to work as a software engineer after he graduates from ACU. The most important thing I’ve learned at ACU is that life isn’t about me. When you stop and consider the lives of everyone around you and how they are all experiencing life alongside you, it helps put things into perspective in a way that I hadn’t had previously. Even though I entered college knowing that life isn’t about me, it wasn’t until I grew up and matured that my life started to reflect that belief.” Today's University Scholar Spotlight features Ben Blackmon, who recently graduated from ACU with a degree in Digital Entertainment Technology (DET) and a minor in Bible. He will be attending Guildhall SMU in the fall, a graduate program designed for video game development where he will be part of the level design track. Meet our University Scholar, Garrett Powell. A native of Aledo, Texas, who carries a 3.9 GPA while majoring in computer science with a focus on software engineering and minoring in mathematics. Garrett has been very involved on campus with everything from research to the Swing Cats. He has been working as an intern for Funeral Directors Life Insurance Company and will go to work with FCLIC as a DevOps Developer upon graduation. Michael Thorson, senior computer science and digital entertainment technology double major, completed an internship with iHeartMedia this past summer. Michael was tasked with designing mockups and features for upcoming software to be used by radio personalities across the country. "I gained perspective on how the design and development process worked and learned to reach out to my coworkers when I needed help."

Sophomore computer science major, Brendan Gipson, had the opportunity to intern with Cherokee Nation Businesses working in IT support this summer in Oklahoma. He advises future interns to not be afraid to ask questions of fellow employees. "Extract every ounce of knowledge you can from the people around you so you can get the most out of your internship."

When Alissa Davis – who is pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Digital Entertainment Technology (DET) with an emphasis on Video Game Design and is on target to graduate in May 2023 – started her apprenticeship with Funeral Director’s Life Insurance Company on June 1, she had no choice but to get right to work and help her co-workers make it through one of the saddest moments in the recent history of the country.
