Founded in 1923 as a United Methodist institution, McMurry University is a vibrant and comprehensive center of undergraduate education. McMurry has a national reputation for excellence and value through the achievements of its faculty, students and graduates. The University enrolls more than 1,000 students and has an average class size of 16. No graduate assistants teach courses and over 91% of ou

r professors have achieved the highest degree in their academic discipline. Offering a diverse academic curriculum students can choose from 45 majors in the arts, business, education and the sciences as well as our pre-professional programs in medicine, dentistry, engineering, law, pharmacy, physical therapy and others. The three-week May Term gives students an opportunity to explore a subject outside their major, and the Servant Leadership Program teaches students about ethics and helps develop leadership qualities. McMurry has over 40 clubs and organizations and 19 intercollegiate sports. Students are engaged with the community and average over 24,000 hours of annual service. Our beautiful campus is located on 52 acres in Abilene, Texas, a city of over 118,000 friendly people.

This program allows students to gain hands-on experience by working with real clients in various aspects of health and wellness. One of our upcoming seniors, Travis Alonge, has been given the opportunity to work with the best client of all: Wally War Hawk. We are rounding out our retiree recognition with a dynamic duo! Carl & Rene Scott contributed a combined 31 years of service to McMurry University.

Carl began his career at McMurry in 2009 as the Director of University Wellness and Recreation before entering into his current position as Director of Facilities and Campus Projects. In this time, Carl has overseen many campus projects, however, his leadership was most evident during the simultaneous construction of the Centennial Commons student apartments and the renovation of the Garrison United Campus Center.

Renee joined McMurry in 2008 as the Human Resources Assistant. She later moved on to be the Coordinator of Accounts Payable before working with Dr. Sandra Harper as the Executive Assistant to the President. Her contributions of grace and professionalism will leave an indelible mark on the McMurry community.

This year Carl & Rene Scott were both given the Outstanding Staff Award and Outstanding Service Award. Thank you both for your service to McMurry University!

Today, we would like to honor Cynthia Rutledge, who retired from McMurry after an illustrious 22-year career. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas Tech University, a Master of Science degree from Texas A&M University, and a Doctorate of Education from the University of Northern Colorado.

Cynthia joined the McMurry faculty in 2001 and served as the Chair of the Kinesiology & Health Fitness Department from 2013 to 2016. During her time here, she also played a crucial role as the Chairperson of the Institutional Review Board from 2006 to 2023, where she helped establish important policies and procedures for sabbaticals, research, and other proposals. In 2016, Cynthia was promoted to Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs for Curriculum and Online Campus, where she was instrumental in creating the online bachelor program, supporting faculty research, and serving as an academic liaison for dual credit programs.

Thank you, Cynthia, for your valuable contributions to McMurry University!
