Recently, Robin McDaniel from Texas Farm Credit spoke during SHRM chapel. SHRM president, Shasha Yavorsky, says “she discussed the importance of a lattice or non-traditional approach to career growth. She encouraged students to value connections, take initial steps to ‘get a foot in the door,’ and look for ways to grow in different directions rather than just upward. Robin also shared her view on being grateful for each career step and the importance of leaving a positive impact in any role.”

What's Your Why?
Senior finance and accounting major, Jamie Lewis, said “Initially I came to ACU in the pursuit of a dream of playing college golf. COBA was something that contributed to my choice to come to ACU. I liked the idea of not being a number, and rather having a personal relationship with the people around me. I thought that the intimate learning experience would help me reach my potential in the classroom. The facilities were also a big draw factor. I am interested in business because it is what makes the world go round. I have always been good with numbers, and I enjoy problem-solving. I work hard because I realize I am very fortunate to have the opportunities I have been given, and there are many people that would love to have this opportunity. I am driven to be the best possible version of myself and to make the most of every day. I feel as though I am being challenged on a daily basis. I am learning content that I can take with me and use in my future career.”

Last month, Women Leading Finance held a donation drive for the Noah Project. WLF philanthropy director, Denise Cardona, said they “collected essential items such as shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothpaste, and other items. These donations support a local Abilene non-profit called the Noah Project where they advocate and treat victims of domestic abuse. The items collected will help individuals who have been displaced from their homes due to their living situations and can help bring a bit of peace of mind when it comes to buying personal hygiene products. We hope to impact the Noah Project in a positive way with these items and connect with the local community that we live in as ACU students.”

What’s Your Why?
Junior Information Systems major Jacqueline Garcia Torres said “I chose COBA because I wanted to leave ACU with the skills to prepare me for a rapidly changing industry. Business has always been a key part of my family's life. My mother has a degree in Business Administration, and my father is an entrepreneur, but the part that drew me into business would be the diversity and versatility of all the different fields and industries. As a person who enjoys a challenge, I also appreciate the complexities of business. While business might be hard at times, the joy of learning and completing tasks that previously seemed almost impossible brings me immense satisfaction. The satisfaction and joy keep me motivated to work hard. A part of my classes that I enjoy the most are the practical and real-world assignments and projects that professors assign. Their use of real-world problems and industry-standard tools is one of the many reasons I am proud to be a part of COBA.”
