Save the date!

Students interested in learning more about the profession of pharmacy are invited to attend one of Appalachian College of Pharmacy's free summer camps. Activities include learning about the pharmacy profession from expert faculty; conducting patient assessment procedures; discovering pharmacy compounding techniques; practicing pharmacotherapy on a human simulator; an admissions workshop and lunch.

The Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center is currently recruiting for the following position:

• Director of Healthcare Education Initiatives (full-time, salaried, with benefits) - The primary purpose of this position is to promote the healthcare education programs available at the Center and to promote the Center’s capabilities in facilitating the instruction and delivery of healthcare related educational programs, including clinical simulation. The incumbent will perform ongoing needs assessment and outreach activities with area healthcare providers, healthcare employers, students, and educational providers to identify needs and gaps in current healthcare education through surveys and other feedback mechanisms. The incumbent will work with the Center’s leadership and educational and healthcare partners to identify ways in which identified gaps in healthcare education and needs, both present and future, can be met by the Center and its educational partners through instructional and professional development opportunities. The incumbent will be responsible for leveraging resources and partnerships to ensure the Center’s healthcare education programs are promoted to target audiences. The incumbent will analyze available demand, job skills and workforce data and reports on healthcare related subjects and be able to interpret and report on the data. The incumbent may serve on regional and statewide boards and councils related to healthcare education and workforce development and represent the Center at appropriate events related to healthcare education and outreach activities. The incumbent may also be asked to instruct or facilitate relevant healthcare related courses or learning opportunities as appropriate. The incumbent will also perform other related duties in the furtherance of the Center’s educational and workforce development mission.

Progress is being made on our Regional Simulation Lab for Nursing and Allied Health professions! Today we were excited to unbox these two Lifecast manikins. Lifecast has developed highly accurate and lifelike medical manikins to provide the most realistic medical simulations. We can't wait for students and professionals to utilize these manikins and more simulation equipment to come when the Simulation Lab opens next year!

The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the primarypoint of contact for the Center's marketing and public relations objectives. The position is responsible for marketing support, social media and website management, content creation, media relations, and community engagement. The position works with key stakeholders and college, university, and facility partners to promote Center activity and programs. The position also serves as a liaison to local and regional media outlets to provide positive and informative messaging related to Center activity. The incumbent will also perform other related duties in the furtherance of the Center’s educational mission.

We're just kicking off a busy fall season!

Yesterday, the Higher Ed Center hosted an Employee Recognition Cookout for our team. We began our Employee Recognition Program, Caught Doing a GREAT Job, a few years ago as an anonymous way for our staff to recognize their fellow team members for work-related efforts that go above and beyond the call of duty. We received over 100 nominations for this year's event with more than 30 employees being awarded Certificates of Recognition (and a special prize!)

A special thank you to our incredible staff for your hard work, dedication, and commitment to the Center and our team! In the words of our Executive Director and Agency Head, the Center is a great place doing great things because of you!

We had an amazing turn out for our College of Older Adults Welcome Back Registration Day yesterday. Classes begin next Tuesday, September 10, but it's not too late to register! Visit Eventbrite to sign up for classes today:

The College for Older Adults is designed for learners 50 years and older. Enrichment courses are offered ranging from computer applications to history, travel, art, and wellness in six-week terms. Classes meet in the mornings and afternoons with a lunch break in between. Volunteer instructors prepare and teach the courses. The basic fee is $40 for registration with optional fees for course materials and special field trips.

Our College for Older Adults will host its traditional Welcome Back Celebration at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, September 4, 2024.

We encourage you to attend the Welcome Back event. It provides a great opportunity to meet our instructors and hear details of the exciting classes we will be offering in the fall term.

In-person registration will be available at the Welcome Back event and online class registration will be open that afternoon.

The first COA classes will meet on Tuesday, September 10th.

Yesterday, the Higher Ed Center team celebrated our 3rd annual Staff Retreat at Goldie's Refuge in Whitetop, VA. Ultimately, our goal for the retreat is to boost morale and motivation; foster collaboration, communication, and team spirit; and, maybe most importantly, give our team members a much-needed and well-deserved break! Taking time away from our daily duties allowed us to reconnect, reenergize, and refocus. We're back at the Center today ready to serve you!

We're thrilled to welcome the inaugural class of the Southwest Virginia Healthcare Excellence Academy Lab School to the Higher Ed Center for orientation today! SWVA-HEALS is designed for 10th-12th grade students interested in pursuing careers in healthcare. The academy serves as a pipeline preparing students as future healthcare professionals to meet workforce shortages in southwest Virginia.
