Arcadia Exhibitions Arcadia Exhibitions organizes programming for four distinct spaces at Arcadia University throughout the calendar year.
(11)

A nationally recognized venue for contemporary art in the greater Philadelphia area, the Spruance Gallery is a 1,100-square-foot facility (housed in a 1893 power station) that has for over 30 years provided the region with a stimulating roster of individual and thematic exhibitions shaped by our mission to encourage dialogue among artists, educators, students and the general public about current v

isual art and its socio-cultural relevance. Along with bringing the work of previously unexhibited or unknown artists to our region, Arcadia Exhibitions is committed to local artists, actively encouraging innovative approaches to art production and acknowledging the contribution of long-standing, influential members of the art community. Educational programs invite the artists and highly respected scholars and curators to discuss each exhibition with the public.

The opening reception for “Perpetual Inventory: A Ruminative Installation by Scott Kip” will be held on September 12, 2024 at 4:30 PM in Spruance Gallery.

During a residency, which began in June of 2024, Kip has transformed the 1,100 square foot Spruance Gallery into a sequence of chamber-like enclosures linked by corridors and stairs built primarily of repurposed wood. Each space will provide unique views of a tableau of significant objects from throughout Kip’s life.

Both the artist and guest curator Richard Torchia will be on hand to discuss the work and answer visitors' questions. A more formal discussion between Kip and Torchia will take place on October 22 at 6:00 PM in the Great Room, University Commons.

Light refreshments will be provided and the event is free and open to the public.

Arcadia Exhibitions is saddened to hear of the passing of Dorothy Lichtenstein, philanthropist and founding director of her late husband, Roy Lichtenstein’s, charitable foundation.

Lichtenstein, who attended Beaver College, personally provided the funds that covered the cost of transportation of the Pati Hill Collection from the artist’s studio in France to Arcadia University, where it resides today. Without her generosity, it is hard to say what might have happened to these historically significant materials.

Hello, this is Willow Edmonds, the design and marketing lead for the exhibitions program. Each week we will be sharing progress on ’s installation in Spruance Gallery both on our and Scott’s feed.

This week’s progress is underway on an observation platform with the assistance of .

This takes place in the wake of Friday’s announcement on the closing of University of the Arts. Both Scott and Phil are UArts alumni.

Scott states, “You don’t think of your college disappearing. I’ve got a bunch of friends who work there… or used to still work there. I think they’re all…surprised and disoriented. I mean, I was there in the second half of the 90s and it was a really great place to be. Not just in the school there, but in that neighborhood. I think of it as a very neighborhood kind of place where the Last Drop was down the street and Love Park and City Hall were up the street. And there just were so many overlapping communities at that school at that time… the craft department that I was in was amazing. It was an un-repeatedly good time to be there.”

Phil expressed that he felt the same, saying, “I’m so happy that I spent time there and that that was where I got my education. It's just a weird feeling to just walk by there…the school never had a formal campus, but those corners, it felt like that was their turf. It felt like home. It's a weird unsettling feeling to be like, where do these kids go and where does all that energy go, and it just seems sort of impossible.”

Join Arcadia Exhibitions on April 29, 2024 at 4:30 PM at the opening reception for the student-generated exhibition “Artifacts of Life and Death: Examining Domestic and Funerary Ceramics from West Africa.”

The event will be held in the Judith Taylor Gallery, located in the basement of the Landman Library. Light refreshments will be provided and the event is free and open to the public.

This exhibition focuses on pottery of the Bura, Chamba, Dakakari, and Nupe cultures of West Africa donated to the University in 2008 by David and Karina Rilling. Most often hand-built and fired by the women of these cultural groups, the ceramic objects in this show offer insights into both the funerary and domestic rituals of these West African societies.

The primary goal for this exhibition is to spark further conversations about the ethics of collecting and preserving the cultural heritage of marginalized groups.

At Arcadia Exhibitions, we are saddened by the passing of Faith Ringgold.

Ringgold (1930 – 2024) was an influential artist and activist notable for her use of quilting and painting to discuss issues involving the African American experience and the feminist movement in America.

Beaver College / Arcadia University was fortunate to present Ringgold’s work on multiple occasions. In 1975, she presented a solo exhibition in the Richard E. Fuller Art Gallery – a collection of masks and costumes used for a performance on campus, and gave a public lecture titled “Feminist and Black Art.”

In 2015, Ringgold was included in the exhibition “Threading the Maze” in the Spruance Gallery along with artists Lee Krasner, Elizabeth Murray, and Miriam Schapiro.

“Coming to Jones Road: Under a Blood Red Sky #8” is on display as part of the “Femfolio” collection in our current exhibition “A Strong In Your Face Word: Works from the Brodsky Center at PAFA,” on view until April 21, 2024.

According to , curator of the exhibition, “Frequently narrating the nuanced complexities inherent in the construction of identity, Jonathan Lyndon Chase draws immaterial limbs that seem both connected to the subject and belonging to another person… Connected to the visual work is an audio recorded on the CD within a ready-made brown paper lunch bag incorporating the voices of both the artist and their husband, William, accompanied by ambient noise and rain effects…While the metallic quality of the voices and rain effects draws a parallel to the clouds represented in the lithograph, these gender flexible sounds also offer a unique space for the amplification and expansion of q***r, trans, and non-binary voices.”

Central to her large-scale drawings is the Black female body entwined with interpretations of culturally significant landscapes and objects…[t]he figure is not pigmented and is one and the same as the handmade paper support itself, a watermark technique that encapsulates the timeless themes of limitlessness, empowerment, and the strength inherent in the collective history of women. ”

Our Story

Arcadia University is host to an active exhibitions program presenting an eclectic and thought-provoking array of art, artifacts, and research materials in venues throughout the Glenside campus.

The program is anchored by the Spruance Art Gallery (located in the Benton Spruance Art Center), which, since 1985, has served as a recognized regional base of excellence in the visual arts for the general public and the entire University community. Housed in an historic power plant (built in 1892), it presents works by nationally and internationally known artists as well as artists based in Philadelphia. Additionally, each April, this space is used to present thesis projects undertaken by graduating seniors of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts.

This programming is complemented by exhibitions in the Rosedale and Harrison Galleries located on adjacent floors in the University Commons. Exhibitions presented in these two spaces include a juried student biennial, projects by art department faculty, alumni, as well as student-curated shows. These are joined by exhibitions generated through the Art Research Collaboration (ARC) Exhibition Program, which engages with other university departments, local and international educational partners, alumni, and students to present visual information, artifacts, and other academic research-based materials in an art gallery context.
