Arcadia Exhibitions

Arcadia Exhibitions Arcadia Exhibitions organizes programming for four distinct spaces at Arcadia University throughout the calendar year.

A nationally recognized venue for contemporary art in the greater Philadelphia area, the Spruance Gallery is a 1,100-square-foot facility (housed in a 1893 power station) that has for over 30 years provided the region with a stimulating roster of individual and thematic exhibitions shaped by our mission to encourage dialogue among artists, educators, students and the general public about current v

isual art and its socio-cultural relevance. Along with bringing the work of previously unexhibited or unknown artists to our region, Arcadia Exhibitions is committed to local artists, actively encouraging innovative approaches to art production and acknowledging the contribution of long-standing, influential members of the art community. Educational programs invite the artists and highly respected scholars and curators to discuss each exhibition with the public.

“This project also aims to inspire forward progress—a shift toward more mindful, sustainable practices in how we live, eat, and relate to one another. Through these gatherings, we can move toward a future that embraces restorative practices, sustainable food systems, and face-to-face connections.”

“This piece [“For the Future (Flag Version)“] began as an outdoor art installation created for the Schuylkill Center…. For this version, I’ve reimagined those banners as an American flag. “For the Future” calls attention to the deep divisions that hinder action on environmental issues, urging us to move beyond these obstacles and invest our energy in real solutions. The climate crisis is an underlying challenge that impacts many other social and political issues we face today—and it demands urgent, unified action.”

Julia serves as an adjunct professor at Arcadia University. She uses a diverse range of media alongside observing local ecologies as the foundation of her practice. Her work has been showcased at numerous venues in the Philadelphia area, including the , , , and the Francis Cope House at Awbury Arboretum.

“For this exhibition, I chose to present "Ch’ixi", a recent work completed in 2024 that was part of my solo exhibition, Todos los Fuegos el Fuego, at Fleisher Art Memorial. This piece, in part, responds to the question: “What kind of future do I envision as an individual?” It embraces the state of flux and the uncertainties inherent in constructing, contemplating, and reimagining other futures.”

Idalia serves as an Adjunct Professor at Arcadia University. She also serves as an Adjunct Instructor at , where she received her MFA in Photography. Her multidisciplinary practice spans performance, installation, and photography, focusing on the Latinx diaspora and exploring physical and mental spaces of transition and perpetual becoming.

Outside of our exhibition spaces, our work study and apprentices assist us with many other important tasks. Through Arcadia’s minor in Arts Entrepreneurship and Curatorial Studies, ’25 has been assisting with caring for the University’s permanent collection, researching best practices for safe storage and collection policies, in addition to learning how to build storage crates and installing works on campus.

In the University Archives, Exhibitions work study, alongside students from the Gallery Practicum, measure items from the collection to determine dimensions for construction of storage crates.

There are lots of ways for students to get involved in the program. Message us to find out how you can get involved.

“The year that I made this painting [““Self Portrait in C’s Studio Listening to Lana Del Rey”] was two years before my 36 year old partner would be diagnosed with late stage cancer. Within 18 months he would die from the disease and I would be left to figure out what’s next without him…So what is forward progress now? It’s leaning into what I love again in painting like texture, color, gesture, and the figure. Progress is spending less time worrying about who I paint like or if I am “good enough.” It’s letting things flow out of me freely. It’s not being afraid to fail. It’s understanding that even if I do fail the stakes are low as - it’s just a painting.”

Abigail serves as an Adjunct Professor at Arcadia University. She received her Studio Art MFA from in 2023. Her paintings explore the concepts of time, perception, memory, and beauty. She has been a resident at the Vermont Studio Center three times and is a two-time winner of the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant.

“For this faculty exhibition “Forward Progress,” I chose older work from my studio that was originally created with an eye towards forward progress that is still far from being realized. Although I have sold to collectors all of my daily paintings over the past 18 years, because of their historical and personal significance, I kept these three paintings and decided to exhibit them for the first time in this exhibition because of their renewed historical significance today.”

Abbey Ryan is an alumna who completed undergraduate work in both science and art at Arcadia University (BA and BFA) and post-graduate work in medical illustration at School of Medicine. Abbey received her MFA in Painting from . Abbey celebrates nature, contemplation, and beauty in her oil paintings with compositions touching on themes such as peace, light and shade, grief, and the human condition.

“My drawing, “my body built this house: wombs and rooms,” represents the challenges I faced during pregnancy and early motherhood, something that has severely altered how I make art. It consists of components done at different times and locations, whenever and wherever I could work, since my life as a professor and mom no longer allows for long stretches in the studio like my previous life could afford.”

Krista is an alumna with a BFA from Arcadia University and an MFA from . In 2017, she co-founded Spillway Collective, an artist collective in Philadelphia for emerging artists. Krista is interested in developing conversations in paintings about the mechanics of relationships and power dynamics in everyday situations.

“…I was always looking for the icon or figure that would best represent me. With Femur I find myself able to vocalize meaningful narratives and at the same time share a point of view on the times we live in. Sure sometimes it might be a bit creepy, there may be monsters around every dark corner but at the end of the day there is humor, hope and above all else—joy.”

Christian “Patch” Patchell serves as a Full-time Visiting Professor at Arcadia University. He began working in the Art and Design program in 2018, receiving his MFA from Arcadia in 2021. Patch is a freelance artist, with an online comic strip centering around his unique characters.

Our Story

Arcadia University is host to an active exhibitions program presenting an eclectic and thought-provoking array of art, artifacts, and research materials in venues throughout the Glenside campus.

The program is anchored by the Spruance Art Gallery (located in the Benton Spruance Art Center), which, since 1985, has served as a recognized regional base of excellence in the visual arts for the general public and the entire University community. Housed in an historic power plant (built in 1892), it presents works by nationally and internationally known artists as well as artists based in Philadelphia. Additionally, each April, this space is used to present thesis projects undertaken by graduating seniors of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts.

This programming is complemented by exhibitions in the Rosedale and Harrison Galleries located on adjacent floors in the University Commons. Exhibitions presented in these two spaces include a juried student biennial, projects by art department faculty, alumni, as well as student-curated shows. These are joined by exhibitions generated through the Art Research Collaboration (ARC) Exhibition Program, which engages with other university departments, local and international educational partners, alumni, and students to present visual information, artifacts, and other academic research-based materials in an art gallery context.
