The Arcadia University Art Research Collaboration (ARC) Exhibition Program provides visual programming derived from the creative and intellectual endeavors of the greater University community. The exhibitions we produce demonstrate an integrative model for presenting visual information, artifacts, and other non-traditional art objects related to academic research and activities in a curated galler

y context. The goal is to demonstrate the inherent mutual benefit of cross-disciplinary efforts between the campus art community and other University departments, as well as with other academic institutions, both local and international.

Arcadia Exhibitions is pleased to announce the opening of our latest show, Living Rocks: Benton Spruance and the Lithographic Process, now on view in the gallery of the Benton Spruance Art Center.

On display are the long time department chair's drawings, proofs, and other ephemera presented alongside finished prints from throughout his prolific career.

This includes a restored lithography press given to Beaver College in 1965 and an original Spruance stone with the image of Havoc in Heaven (1948) still intact.

On December 6, 2017 at 6:00PM Shelley Langdale, Associate Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, will be leading a talk on Spruance through the gallery space, followed by a reception with light refreshments.

Tours will also be available of some of the Department of Art and Design's newly renovated studios, (some of which Spruance had a hand in designing) as well as our new wood shop and mold making facilities.

The event is free and open to the public. Reservations can be made online by following this link. https://www.arcadia.edu/events/2017/12/06/living-rocks-benton-spruance-and-lithographic-process-exhibit-talk-reception

Hope to see you there.

GLENSIDE, Pa. — I was not particularly excited to see a show of copier art. How different could the images of these photocopies be from the actual copies themselves?

Recently Judith Brodsky came to lecture in conjunction with the exhibitions Threading the Maze and The Richard E. Fuller Gallery 1962 - 85.

On this date in 1985 at approximately 4:30 PM Beaver College staff member Alice Lerro was driving behind the Eugenia Fuller Atwood Library when her accelerator pedal jammed and she lost control of her vehicle. In swerving to avoid hitting a student Ms. Lerro ran her mid-70s Cadillac through the twenty-foot wide picture window on the library’s ground floor and into the Richard E. Fuller Gallery.

Fortunately no one was injured, but several artworks from the “Eastern Pennsylvania Regional Drawing Exhibition” were destroyed, and the gallery was rendered unusable. As Suzanne Eckert ’84 and Deb Tonjes ’87 described the state of the gallery in their article for the April 4, 1985 Beaver News, “Freak Accident Occurs at Atwood Library”, “Part of this plaster-board covered cinder-block wall is ripped and smashed inward. Pieces of a display case rest against the rubble. A partially shattered ceiling light hangs overhead in front of the boarded up windows, and the floor is slick with anti-freeze.”

The upcoming exhibition was due to be installed in the gallery in three days. As repairs to the gallery could not be made in time, director Zina Goldsmith—forced to come up with an immediate alternative—quickly managed to transform the painting studio in the Benton Spruance Art Center into a temporary exhibition space.

This story and many others about Arcadia's first gallery will be on display in the Great Room Lobby beginning April 6. In the meantime enjoy this video produced by University Communications about the accident.

In April, Arcadia University Art Gallery will present a selection of works by artists who once exhibited in the Atwood Library gallery space, which was destroyed…
