Students in Arcadia’s Modern Languages program enjoy a unique opportunity to learn about different languages and cultures in a small University setting that is dedicated to global awareness and exploration. The Modern Languages Department’s mission is to provide courses aimed at providing students with both foreign language proficiency and cultural awareness at the level established by Arcadia cur

riculum. Teaching of FL recognizes the increasing importance of knowing how to communicate through the use of a FL for a career in business, political sciences, education, social services, healthcare or government. These students should have a basic ability to communicate on a range of everyday situations and be able to read authentic language texts on a variety of topics. Students should also develop a basic knowledge of Spanish and Hispanic cultures (French and Italian too), geographies, and histories and a degree of sensitivity to cultural and linguistic differences. The department also provides more advanced training in Spanish, French, Italian languages, literatures, and cultures for students who plan to use Spanish, French, or Italian in conjunction with another academic field such as international studies, international business, sociology, and history.
