Should someone study leadership? Here's what one of our graduates had to say.

"There's absolutely no downside to studying leadership. It is something that directly pertains to you and it's a great skillset to have in the professional workplace, no matter where you end up. I think one misconception people can have about leadership is thinking about it in the stereotypical, American fashion in which leaders are always extroverted, charismatic people. In reality, leadership comes into play at every level, even with shy, introverted people. Showing leadership qualities means people respect, trust, and rely on you, no matter your style of leadership and personality characteristics...I learned a lot from my leadership classes. I was a Business major, and so a lot of my time was spent studying textbooks. What I appreciated most about leadership classes was a chance for class discussions on various thoughts/ideas. I really enjoyed learning about various leadership theories and talking about the consequences from employing that type of leadership."

We asked our graduates if and how studying leadership at Adrian College helped them at their job or their career.

Here are some of their answers:

"I think learning about the different types of leadership has helped me with my job. For each client I work on, there is a senior who is in charge of the engagement. From learning leadership styles, I can choose how to phrase or complete things that work best with their leadership style in order to help the team finish the engagement. Also, taking the leadership courses I did made me a more understanding and empathetic person, and more patient with coworkers and clients alike. For me being an accountant, having a good code of ethics is such a large part of my job, which is why I enjoyed the leadership ethics course. We would go through a case study and try to come up with what a person should do when faced with a certain ethical dilemma, and this definitely helped me with my career."
-Madeline Crandle.

"Absolutely. Everyone is a leader in one way or another. It is so important to understand not only the influence you have, but how to wield that influence to better yourself and those around you. I would highly recommend that everyone study leadership."
-Nolan Duda

"Yes, I think studying leadership helped me with my job. I'm in a career that you have to be a leader and you need to show it in order to succeed. If you are weak, your players will see that and they will think that it is ok to be so as well. You need to lead by example in this career. You need to be vocal and step up to the plate when you need to. Taking those leadership courses helped me develop habits to do these things."
-Katie Crawford

"At my current job yes. Leadership classes gave me a nice amount of ethical experience as well to deal with more difficult situations. Studying Leadership also helped me recognize my ability and potential to thrive to be the best leader I can wherever I am needed."
-Carlee Wanless.
