We are deeply saddened by the passing of our esteemed alum, Alice Green. Dr. Green earned an MA and PhD from the UAlbany School of Criminal Justice.

"The entire University at Albany community mourns the loss of a great advocate, philanthropist, and educator,” said UAlbany President Havidán Rodríguez. “Alice Green’s name has long been synonymous with the fight for justice and equity in the Capital Region and beyond. She will be remembered as a tireless advocate for justice for people in marginalized communities and a believer in the transformational power of education. Alice and her husband, Charles Touhey, established a program at UAlbany to diversify the teaching and counseling professions in our region and Alice regularly spoke during New York State Writers Institute events and to UAlbany students. In 2022, UAlbany recognized Alice’s commitment to social justice and advocacy and her ongoing service to underserved communities by naming her a Citizen Laureate of the university."

This fall, UAlbany students will be able to help investigative agencies and the community solve cold cases — including missing persons and unsolved crimes — through internships in the Cold Case Analysis Center, located within the School of Criminal Justice on the Downtown Campus.

The Cold Case Analysis Center, or CCAC, moved to UAlbany under the leadership of Camela Hughes after the College of Saint Rose closed in spring of 2024. Hughes, now a visiting assistant professor in UAlbany’s School of Criminal Justice, got her master’s and PhD degrees from UAlbany.

TODAY! Join us at noon in Milne 200.

Join us at noon on Friday, March 29th for a presentation by Duke University's Tony Cheng on "The Policing Machine: Enforcement, Endorsements, and the Illusion of Public Input."

The past few years have seen Americans express passionate demands for police transformation. But even as discussion of no-knock warrants, chokeholds, and body cameras has exploded, police departments have successfully stonewalled change. Drawing on his recent book, The Policing Machine (University of Chicago Press, 2023), Tony Cheng will discuss the stages of police departments’ resistance, offering a close look at the deep engagement strategies that NYPD precincts have developed with only subsets of the community in order to counter any truly meaningful, democratic oversight. The fundamental challenge with police-community relationships, Dr. Cheng shows, is not to build them. It is that they already exist and are motivated by a machinery designed to stymie reform.

This event is sponsored by The Hindelang Criminal Justice Research Center and hosted by the Justice, Law, and Inequality Working Group.

A new article co-authored by UAlbany SCJ Assistant Professor Jason Robey has been published in Demography and featured in the Washington Post. The research shows that between 1999 and 2019, the Black male incarceration rate dropped by 44%, and notable declines in Black male imprisonment were evident in all 50 states.

A year-long field experiment that provided public defenders at some initial bail hearings found that having an attorney at these hearings lowered the court's use of cash bail and pretrial detention — without increasing the odds of a defendant not showing up at subsequent hearings.

Led by Sishi Wu, who received her PhD from SCJ in April, it’s the first study to evaluate the effects of New York’s bail reform law on the entire state.

New York’s bail reform law had a negligible effect on crime, a School of Criminal Justice study found.
