The annual SOMOS Puerto Rico Conference brings individuals together from across the spectrum in an effort to raise awareness and advocate for public policy that will advance the social mobility of Latino youth via opportunities in education, mentorship, and scholarship.

It is amazing to see so many members of the NYS Legislature, Puerto Rican & Hispanic Task Force, higher education representatives, and others taking part in this year's conference.

❗ The following note was shared with campus neighbors this afternoon regarding several events planned for campus tomorrow to mark the anniversary of Sept. 11 and around our first home football game of the season. ❗

-----------------

Dear campus neighbors,

Tomorrow, Sept. 11., will mark a somber milestone for our campus as well as our first home football game of the season.

Sept. 11 memorial: At 10 a.m., the University will be dedicating a memorial to the 19 UAlbany alums killed in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. There is more information about the memorial here. The bench, which was the work of several dedicated alums, is located along the new shared-use path connecting our new ETEC building to the rest of the Uptown Campus. Also, after 8:45 a.m., the bells on the University’s carillon will be silenced for the remainder of the day.

Given the date, Athletics has attempted to program our first home football game in a way that honors Albany’s Hometown Heroes, including first responders, healthcare workers and members of the military. There are two portions of the program that I wanted to be sure you were aware of in advance:

Pre-game fly-over: At approximately 6:53 p.m., a World War II-era plane will fly over Casey Stadium to honor two WWII veterans who will be serving as honorary team captains during the pre-game coin flip. Please know that this fly-over is being coordinated with the FAA.

Halftime fireworks: There will be a brief (approx. six minutes) fireworks display at halftime – likely around 8:15 p.m.
https://www.albany.edu/news-center/news/2021-group-ualbany-alumni-unveil-911-memorial-bench-ahead-20th-anniversary

The bench sits on the new walking path to ETEC on the Uptown Campus, directly behind the Boor Sculpture Studio.

Ten years after Tropical Storm Irene devastated parts of the Catskills, Adirondacks and Schoharie Valley, the University at Albany, SUNY and the New York State Mesonet have made New York safer and more resilient.

That's the power of a strong public university system like SUNY - The State University of New York.

Great report from Paul Caiano Weather Weather and WNYT NewsChannel 13

https://t.co/gdP1vCXldG

The Capital Region was "blind" to the rainfall amounts while the storm was happening. Now, with a new system called Mesonet, it won't happen again.
