We are profoundly saddened by the passing of our esteemed alum, Alice Green. Dr. Green earned a master’s and doctorate from the UAlbany School of Criminal Justice.

"The entire University at Albany community mourns the loss of a great advocate, philanthropist, and educator,” said UAlbany President Havidán Rodríguez. “Alice Green’s name has long been synonymous with the fight for justice and equity in the Capital Region and beyond. She will be remembered as a tireless advocate for justice for people in marginalized communities and a believer in the transformational power of education. Alice and her husband, Charles Touhey, established a program at UAlbany to diversify the teaching and counseling professions in our region and Alice regularly spoke during New York State Writers Institute events and to UAlbany students. In 2022, UAlbany recognized Alice’s commitment to social justice and advocacy and her ongoing service to underserved communities by naming her a Citizen Laureate of the university."

After a semester-long project, Associate Professor Susan Appe’s Spring 2024 Private Philanthropy, Public Problems and Power undergraduate students awarded $10,000 to the nonprofit Unity House in Troy, N.Y. The class also distributed $250 each to Planned Parenthood in Troy, N.Y. and Jazzy Sun Birthdays in Albany, N.Y.

The Student Philanthropy Fund at Rockefeller College seeks to advance student learning by allowing students to distribute funds to nonprofit organizations as part of coursework in which they learn about philanthropy and the essential role nonprofit organizations play in building vibrant communities.

Rockefeller College is hosting a Public Policy and International Affairs Fellowship Program (PPIA) Public Service Weekend September 20-22 for undergraduate sophomores through recent graduates with an interest in public policy and working in the public sector. PPIA Public Service Weekend will introduce students to a wide variety of professions and sectors in a concise three-day conference format. Political Science Associate Professor Sally Friedman co-wrote an article published in The Conversation and in newspapers nationwide that found social and political differences could ease in the future as younger generations rise to political power.

Younger generations today agree more on key national issues than older generations do. A time of intense polarization may be ending.
