Higher Education in an Era of Democratic Backsliding: Lessons from Brazil, Hungary, and Mexico
Monday, May 5, 2025 • 12-1pm • Via Zoom
How do individual members of the academy respond when governments attempt to undermine institutions of higher education or restrict academic freedom? This panel brings together scholars from Brazil, Hungary, and Mexico to discuss their personal experiences of working in universities at a time when the integrity of their institutions came under attack. The panelists will discuss how political developments in their countries affected the operation of universities and will reflect on the success or failure of efforts by the academic community and the wider public to respond to these challenges.
