Graduate Student Assistant (Hourly)

The New York State Writers Institute is seeking an experienced graduate student for the Fall 2025-Spring 2026 Academic year (with the possibility to be re-hired for a second year).

This position will entail working 5-10 hours per week (fluctuates based on NYSWI event schedule)

Open to Graduate students from any program; PhD student is preferred.

Paid at hourly rate ($22 per hour)

Duties include:

• event coverage and videotaping Writers Institute events, including afternoons/evenings on weeknights and Saturdays (for Book Festival and Film Festival);

• transporting visiting writers/speakers during their stay in Albany (picking them up at the train station or airport and bringing them to their hotel to check in, to campus for their events, and returning them to the train station or airport the following day, occasionally on weekends);

• promoting NYSWI programming through occasional tabling opportunities at on-campus events, outreach to departments/professors and student groups;

• writing assignments (occasionally) including preparing and delivering visiting writer introductions or moderating a craft talk, film notes for film screenings, etc.

• and general office support if needed.

How do individual members of the academy respond when governments attempt to undermine institutions of higher education or restrict academic freedom? This panel brings together scholars from Brazil, Hungary, and Mexico to discuss their personal experiences of working in universities at a time when the integrity of their institutions came under attack. The panelists will discuss how political developments in their countries affected the operation of universities and will reflect on the success or failure of efforts by the academic community and the wider public to respond to these challenges.
