Saint Rose National Mock Trial Team

DARING TO BE LEGENDARY!

The Saint Rose National Mock Trial team competed at the Yale University National Regional AMTA (American Mock Trial Association) Tournament on February 20-21. Thirty top universities and college teams from New England participated (list of participating schools is below). During the competition Saint Rose tried the case of State of Midlands v. Bancroft and Covington four separate times - twice each as prosecution and defense. Their tournament opponents were Yale University, UMASS Amherst, Amherst College and the University of New Hampshire. The only lost was to host school and tournament champion Yale University (0-2). In the other three trials the team tied the University of New Hampshire (1-1) and convincingly defeated UMASS Amherst (2-0) and Amherst College (2-0). The teams 5-3 overall record qualified it for "Honorable Mention" in the tournament and a conditional bid to the Opening Round Championship Series Tournament (ORCS) to be held in Wilmington, Delaware on March 19-20 ( Saint Rose is eligible to participate at ORCS if 2 direct bid teams cannot, for any reason, participate) The teams 5-3 record placed them in the same competitive bracket with teams from Brown University, Wesleyan University, University of Vermont and Clark University and just below the bracket that included Yale University, Williams College, University of Delaware and Tufts University. During the invitational competition season (fall semester) Saint Rose finished 5th in both the UMASS Amherst and the University of Rochester Regional Invitationals. These invitational tournaments featured many of the teams that the Saint Rose faced in the National Tournament and as well as teams from as far away as the University of Texas and Miami of Ohio. At these tournaments team members won individual performance awards Ashley Arcuri and Eamon Murphy (witness) and Kyle Duclos (attorney). In January the team hosted the second annual MLK Scrimmage at the college. Teams from Williams College, University of Rochester and Siena participated and the tried their cases before sitting and retired judges and justices from the Albany area. The new UAlbany AMTA team also attended but did not compete. This year marks the team's best performance to date. In its 4 year history the previous best regional competition score was 3-4-1 last year. We want to thank the Administration of the College for their current and continuing support of this program. We appreciate all that you have done for us. To you the team members - Your coaches want you to know how proud and pleased we all are in your performance this year. You took risks - you challenged yourselves and each other and most of all you DARED TO BE LEGENDARY! Enjoy your success. You earned it.

CSR Criminal Justice Department Lecture Series
Johnny Hincapie: An Actual Innocence Story

On Monday February 15, 2016 the Criminal Justice Program of the College of Saint Rose was honored to have four special guests present the fascinating case of Johnny Hincapie. Investigative journalist Bill Hughes, Robert Dennison, former chairman of the New York State Board of Parole and Martin Cirincione, former Schenectady County Public Defender and former Executive Director of the New York State Division of Parole spoke on a panel at the college telling Mr. Hincapie’s story of his wrongful conviction for the 1990 infamous subway murder of Brian Watkins. Mr. Hincapie also spoke.
In 1990 Brain Watkins and his family were visiting New York City for the U.S. Open Tennis Tournament. They were on the 53rd street subway platform when teenagers started attacking the family. Watkins tried to shield his mother and was fatally stabbed in the process. Eight suspects, including Hincapie were charged with the murder of Brian Watkins. All but one of the defendant’s confessed and seven of the teenagers received 25 years to life in prison including the 18-year-old Hincapie.
Johnny Hincapie was in prison for 25-years but he continued to claim his innocence. Mr. Hincapie now 43-years old has been out of prison since October 6, 2015.
Hincapie’s legal team uncovered new evidence in the form of witnesses who came forward to help Hincapie establish his innocence.
