Congratulations to J.T. Stone, who has won the 2025 Ronald Schafer Memorial Fund Scholarship For the Outstanding Graduating Senior in Journalism AND the Rowley Award for his radio story on Medical Aid in Dying!

An Honors Journalism major, Stone has published more than 100 news articles throughout his high school and college careers, across mediums including newspapers, news websites and public radio stations. An ambitious writer and producer, Stone plans to pursue a career in journalism covering politics and policy, with an interest as well in the arts and entertainment beat.

During his sophomore year, Stone interned at Hot Press, Ireland's premier entertainment magazine, where he pitched and wrote over 70 stories on topics ranging from Ireland’s homelessness crisis and the 2024 U.S. presidential election to live coverage of the 2023 Academy Awards and concerts of global superstars Lewis Capaldi and Lizzo. He went on to intern during his junior year at WAMC Northeast Public Radio, which he says “strengthened his news judgment and confidence speaking to elected officials.” His daily duties included writing copy about breaking news spanning seven states, gathering audio for weekend newscasts by attending press conferences and interviewing state lawmakers. For his final project, he pitched, researched, wrote and tracked a 10-minute radio package about the New York Medical Aid in Dying Act.

Students in Stephen Madarasz’s section of Intro to Mass Communication welcomed an outstanding guest speaker ,Chyresse Wells, recently for firsthand insight into strategic Public Affairs communication.

Wells serves as Vice President for Corning Place Communications in Albany and offered valuable perspective on representing the interest of clients in today’s complex media and public policy environment. Her informal conversation featured extensive questions and answers ranging from media relations, to use of technology in professional communications activity to how students can better prepare for the work of the future.

Prior to joining Corning Place Communications, Wells served as Deputy press Secretary for the New York State Governor and in other communications capacities for the Empire State Development Corporation and Rensselaer County Regional Chamber of Commerce.

She is also the past President of the Capital Region Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America.
