Preparing a new recipe from a cookbook usually means a trip to the grocery store for fresh ingredients, but a new recipe book created by a postdoctoral fellow at The University of New Mexico School of Engineering calls for used eggshells over eggs.

Fiona Bell, a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Computer Science Hand and Machine Lab, recently created a sustainable recipe book for common, at-home 3D printers titled “Biomaterial Recipes for 3D Printing: A Cookbook of Sustainable and Extrudable Bio-Pastes.” The book includes recipes made from orange peels, sawdust, and tree leaves. It also teaches readers how to get creative with the materials available to them and test their own recipes.

Preparing catalysts by sending hot, steamy car exhaust over them could improve their efficiency and reduce the amount of rare and expensive metals required in vehicle catalytic converters and many other emission control and industrial processes.

Reporting in the journal, Nature, an international team of researchers found that the hot car exhaust containing nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide caused a previously unknown reaction that, used proactively, can significantly improve catalytic activity.

Late one night in February, as Fernando Moreu sat in his office wrapping up work in the Centennial Engineering Center, he felt something unusual – the building was vibrating. He waited for it to pass and soon learned there had been an earthquake in west Texas that had been felt all the way in Albuquerque.

“I was in my office on the third floor on a Friday night and I thought the floor was moving and making a mysterious, unique noise. I did not like too much that unique feeling. I waited a little and it went away. I checked the website and there it was: a 10:23 p.m. earthquake,” said Moreu, an associate professor in the Gerald May Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering.

The 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar last month only reemphasized what Moreu had already been thinking– tomorrow’s engineers must be prepared to design for and respond to the unpredictable disasters that could strike anywhere at any time.

Imagine this: It’s the 4th quarter with five minutes left, and both teams are tied in the biggest rivalry football game of the season. It’s a nail-biter, but you’re hungry. You dash to the concession stand quickly for a snack but miss the game-winning touchdown.

Younes Slaoui, a UNM Computer Science student, created a new app so fans won’t miss a touchdown for a treat.

Don't want to miss the game? No worries. A UNM Engineering student created an app that provides in-seat food delivery to fans during sporting events.

When Erin Lawlor wraps up her semesters as a mechanical engineering student at The University of New Mexico, she returns home to Anchorage, Alaska and spends summers working as a volunteer firefighter.

Her firefighting experience helped inspire an undergraduate research project on materials testing and fire safety that won second place in the Best Student Paper Competition at the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Gulf-Southwest Section Conference, earlier this month.

Lawlor was mentored by Mechanical Engineering Professor Tariq Khraishi throughout the project.

Engineering graduates are needed more than ever as job growth in the field continues to outpace the overall U.S. labor market. To help meet this demand, engineering schools will need to recruit and retain students representative of the gender, racial and ethnic diversity of the U.S. population. The inaugural JEADI Summit held last week helped UNM School of Engineering faculty, staff and students develop next steps to improve student success, foster inclusive excellence, and improve climate.
