Our Story
A LEGACY OF INNOVATION
Established in 1945 as UNMβs first health profession college, we are New Mexico's leader in pharmacy education, research and practice, and a model for best practices for pharmacy across the nation.
THE STUDENT PHARMACIST EXPERIENCE
With world-class clinical and basic science faculty, and a student to faculty ratio of 7:1, our student pharmacists engage fully with a comprehensive curriculum delivered in state-of-the-art facilities. Each student is a valued member of a close-knit, vibrant and inclusive community. Our student organizations are both plentiful and prolific - consistently winning regional and national awards and elected offices.
PREMIER GRADUATE RESEARCH PROGRAMS
Our research program ranks 15th (out of 139 school of pharmacy) in total NIH funding. Our MS and PhD students learn from, and enjoy the benefit of mentorship by, nationally and internationally recognized faculty who consistently excel in high impact publications and intellectual property (patent) disclosures. Our PhD, MS, and PharmD/MS dual degree programs produce graduates who are highly prepared to begin successful and fulfilling careers as respected members of the next generation of leaders in biomedical, academic, pharmaceutical outcomes and policy innovations.
INTERPROFESSIONAL EDUCATION
As part of an academic health sciences center, interprofessional educational experiences flourish at UNM, providing our student pharmacists with vital training alongside medical, nursing, and other health profession students and preparing them to take their place as part of a comprehensive health care team.
THE BIRTHPLACE OF BOTH ADVANCED PRACTICE & NUCLEAR PHARMACY
Our Pharmacy Practice faculty are leaders in developing innovative models of patient care and new roles for pharmacists. We are one of only a select few colleges in the nation who offer the student pharmacist the ability to work toward certification in nuclear pharmacy while earning a PharmD.
OUR DIVERSITY IS OUR GREATEST STRENGTH
Our student body is among the most diverse in the nation, earning the national Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award and multiple national scholarships for our diversity initiatives.
PHARMACY IN NEW MEXICO
New Mexico is one of only four states in which pharmacists with advanced training can practice as mid-level providers in the healthcare system. In addition, all New Mexico pharmacists can prescribe and administer all vaccinations to patients of all ages, prescribe and dispense oral hormonal contraceptives, smoking cessation agents, travel medications and naloxone, and perform tuberculin skin testing.
IMPROVING THE LIVES OF NEW MEXICANS
UNM College of Pharmacy has awarded more than 3,000 pharmacy degrees and has served as the training ground for 66% of pharmacists practicing in New Mexico today. Our skilled, compassionate alumni serve patients in urban and rural communities and are leaders in their communities as well as their profession.
