Earlier this summer, UNM SA + P staff took part in a team outing to Aurora Borealis Glassworks where they were treated to a group glass blowing class. This week the dean’s office hosted a popsicle party and viewing opportunity so employees could admire their individual creations as well as those of their colleagues.

Participants included Fab Lab employees and student assistants, who shared their excitement to learn new methods and work with different materials in the role of student rather than instructor.

Thanks to FAB Lab Coordinator Kirsten Angerbauer and Academic Operations Officer Lisa Stewart for initiating the unique and fascinating learning opportunity.

Our Albuquerque SA + P Architecture + Design Summer Academy students have benefited from exceptional instruction as part of their immersive and intensive 3-week education experience. Thanks to Katherine Boles for leading academy efforts for the current summer session and our SA+P faculty and graduate students who have provided invaluable education and mentoring. This past couple of weeks, under the guidance of Assistant Professor of Architecture Stephanie Bunt and Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture Catherine Harris as well as our phenomenal graduate students, high school participants have mastered the fundamentals and learned about the importance of placemaking and problem solving. They’ve also gained tremendous hands-on and practical experience in creating their own designs. We are looking forward to their final presentations as the academy wraps up next week.

Our SA+P Architecture + Design Summer Academy is in full swing. The program is designed to introduce High School Juniors and Seniors to the disciplines in which the SA+P offers degrees and certificates, preparing them for application to our undergraduate programs. The Santa Fe session wrapped up last month and we are a week into the Albuquerque session at Pearl Hall. We’re sharing a few pictures from the Santa Fe Academy, with sincere appreciation to the teams of professionals and instructors who generously share their expertise to inspire the next generation of architects and planners.

Hot off the press! Please enjoy UNM Associate Professor of Architecture Nora Wendl's timely article, produced during her recent sabbatical for Places Journal. Published not long after the expiration of the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act's expiration, its account of the Downwinders plight is yet another attempt to convince the U.S. government to do right by its citizens. As it sheds light on everything Oppenheimer, the movie, missed, it is an excellent example of public scholarship!

As the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) expires, nuclear Downwinders in the Tularosa Basin near the Trinity Site push the United States to reckon with the legacies of Oppenheimer's Manhattan Project.

The UNM School of Architecture + Planning is currently accepting nominations for the 2024 On the Brinck Book Awards. Deadline extended to June 15, 2024. This annual competition honors contemporary and emerging values in design by celebrating books that offer new perspectives and resonate with the formative writings of J.B. Jackson. The selection criteria for this competition come directly from Jackson’s enlightened approach to scholarship: emphasizing new and overlooked areas of study, challenging existing scholarship, integrating allied disciplines, and appealing to a broad readership.
