Vision
Our Greatest Aspirations for the Future
As one of the Provost’s Areas of Public Engagement, the SSP spawns experiential learning, research, and service activities to implement practical and systemic solutions for sustainability in the community, Southwest, nation, and planet. In the future, our faculty, students, and staff will be members of horizontally organized, emergent networks of stak

eholders who cooperate as multiple communities of practice to implement sustainability solutions. Outcomes of our state-wide initiative, the Alliance for the Carbon-neutral Food-shed in New Mexico, will ensure the widespread adoption of sound environmental, social, and economic practices that increase access to healthy, local, organic food by means of practices that do not exacerbate global warming or put people at risk...

SSP faculty Andreas Hernandez and Ben Warner and SSP administrator Sarah Blake toured the sustainable concrete lab of engineering professor Maryram Hojati. They were joined by Sandra West from the Albuquerque Sustainability Office and Amy Rosbrough from the New Mexico Climate Change Bureau.

Professor Hojati and her student Daiquiri Zozaya are conducting cutting edge research on sustainable concrete that is appropriate for local environments and has a far less ecological impact. Traditional concrete has a significant carbon footprint - some estimate up to 8% of total carbon emitted annually. Professor Hojati's lab is working on concrete that has a much lesser impact or even stores carbon in the ground through adding ingredients such as biochar. They are currently working with Native communities on appropriate forms of sustainable concrete for NM, as well as how to use sustainable concrete on the Moon and on Mars.

Professor Hojati is excited to work with City and State officials to help guide the use of sustainable concrete. In the South of the State, officials are interested in using sustainable concrete to fill up old oil wells. Professors Hernandez and Warner hope that SSP can continue to grow as a networking hub to link governance and NGO's with sustainability expertise around UNM.
