The success of this year’s Black History Month Kick-off Brunch is attributed to the exceptional support and dedication of our partners, African American Student Services. We successfully hosted a full house, including faculty, staff, students, and community members from across New Mexico.

The event ran seamlessly, thanks to the professionalism of our esteemed guest speakers: Gabriella “Brie” Surodjawan, the Mistress of Ceremonies; AASS Leader, Michelle Njonkou; our chairperson, Dr. Kirsten Pai Buick; Director of AASS, Brandi Stone; Provost James Holloway; Dean Jennifer Malat; Doug Small, Director of Public Affairs and Interfaith Liaison for Mayor Tim Keller; President of the University, Garnett Stokes; Dean Alfred Mathewson, Professor Emeritus of Law, and former Co-Dean of the University of New Mexico School of Law.

Special recognition goes to our local keynote speaker Aja Brooks, who not only serves as the Executive Assistant United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico but is also a member of the Iota Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Incorporated, Secretary-treasurer of the State Bar of NM, and mentor of the Bridge the Gap Mentorship Program. Aja’s background and life lessons resonated with and inspired the audience, urging us to apply them to our daily lives. We express sincere appreciation for her attendance, wisdom, intelligence, humor, and ability to capture our hearts and attention.

Furthermore, we extend our thanks to Tim Harris, Graduate Assistant in African American Student Services, for his moving rendition of the first stanza of Lift Every Voice and Sing.

Gratitude also extends to all attendees and sponsors of this event from UNM and the community. Your unwavering support has been integral to the success of this Brunch throughout the years, and we thank you wholeheartedly.

Lastly, a heartfelt thank you to the dedicated members of UNM Catering for providing a wonderful dining experience.

Thank you all for attending and supporting.

See you all next year!
