The University of New Mexico Black Law Student Association (BLSA) hopes that you and your family are staying safe and healthy during this unprecedented pandemic involving COVID-19.

We are saddened by the fact that we weren't able to have our spring soul food cookout and our 3-on-3 basketball tournament/End of Year BBQ this year. However, we know that it is important to keep our communities safe and we hope to be able to offer those events next year!

Last Saturday, BLSA held a practice LSAT and panel discussion with UNMSOL students, Professor Sonia Gipson Rankin and Dean Alfred Mathewson! It was a wonderful event with food sponsored by the New Mexico Black Lawyer’s Association!!! We are so grateful for all who helped with this event!

BLSA held two great events this past week. We had a movie night with the movie Glory and discussion with Professor Kastenberg. Then later in the week we had a discussion about the movie Just Mercy with Professors Ahranjani, Creel , and Gipson Rankin. Great week with UNMSOL students and faculty!!!

BLSA members and other UNMSOL students along with our faculty advisor at the MLK Jr. Day March! We had the opportunity to speak with Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller and the First Lady, Elisabeth Kistin Keller. Great conversation about the work of the city’s Office of Civil Rights. Great event!

BLSA members enjoyed watching Just Mercy this afternoon with fellow UNMSOL students/faculty. Just Mercy is a movie about Bryan Stevenson’s work to free an innocent man on death row. This movie is a good reminder of the importance of the fight for justice and why we went to law school!!!

BLSA received a special invitation to attend a screening of Queen and Slim last night. It was a great experience for us to share this time together and the movie is a topic very relevant to the mission of our organization. BLSA is committed to supporting law students and those interested in becoming law students in addressing these issues surrounding the black community through the legal system.

BLSA had a great final general meeting of the year! Lunch was donated by Nexus Brewery (chicken and waffles) and it was delicious! We discussed all of the amazing things that BLSA has done this semester and we’re very excited for everything on the agenda for next semester!!! We are dedicated to making an impact on legal issues surrounding the black community and empowering black law students at UNMSOL!!!

It "spotlights Alabama public interest attorney Bryan Stevenson's tireless advocacy for a more equitable criminal justice system that finally breaks away from a dark and troubling legacy of racial discrimination. It sheds light on how American courts have unfairly and systematically administered the death penalty according to the race of the defendant."
