The American Indian Law Center, LLC hosted the 2024 Pre Law Summer-Institute (PLSI) Orientation on Friday, May 31, 2024, at the UNM School of Law. The AILC is a non-profit organization that, among other things, prepares prospective American Indian and Alaska Native law students for the rigors of law school through an intensive eight-week program. PLSI is in its 57th year and continues to teach students the unique methods of law school research, analysis, and writing. The AILC is housed at the UNM School of Law and uses UNM classrooms and facilities.

The 2024 PLSI students proudly represent over 15 tribes. Many students from this program will go on to directly serve their tribes and contribute to legal scholarship and practice. The PLSI program runs through July 26. We invite UNM staff, faculty, students, and alumni to introduce themselves to the students and wish them well this summer and into law school!

Rachel Swanteson-Franz, a rising 2L student at the School of Law, was awarded the competitive Peggy Browning Fund Fellowship.

The Peggy Browning Fund helps law students gain experience in workplace justice advocacy by providing fellows with stipends for 10 weeks of employment with labor-related mentor organizations. Swanteson-Franz will spend the summer working at the New Mexico Center for Law and Poverty. She is one of 117 law students from around the country selected from a pool of nearly 4,000 applicants for this year’s program.

Swanteson-Franz spent four years working in the environmental field, both in research and advocacy, before choosing to attend law school. She hopes to pursue work at the intersection of environmental justice and labor justice legal issues.

We are honored to have U.S. Secretary of the Interior and our very own UNM School of Law alumna, Deb Haaland, as the spring commencement keynote address for the all-school UNM commencement on May 11.

Deb Haaland completed her Bachelors at UNM and went on to receive her Juris Doctor in Indian law from UNM School of Law in 2006.

Her academic career is the exemplification of determination and perseverance, supporting her education as well as her daughter through her college years. Her endurance has led her to becoming the first Native American to serve as cabinet secretary, now serving as the secretary of the interior.

We are excited to have our cherished alum back on campus!
