From Dean Atta's award-winning poetry collection, The Black Flamingo:

"Don't come out because you think society expects you to. Come out for yourself. Come out to yourself. Shout, sing it. Softly stutter. Correct those who say they knew before you did. That's not how sexuality works, it's yours to define."

You may have heard that many institutions are collecting used eclipse glasses to be sent to schools in Latin America for children to view the October 2024 annular eclipse. The wonderful students of Alma College's LEAPS (Leaders for Environmental Awareness, Protection and Sustainability) have organized a collection program for you to return your gently used eclipse glasses towards this cause.

Alma College Library

In 1889, at a cost of $8,000 the library was the third building to be constructed on the Alma College campus. It had the capacity to hold approximately 2,000 volumes. The library was built of red brick and sandstone, offering a large reading room with a cozy fireplace on the first floor and gymnasium on the upper floor. The tower was used for purposes of the Alma KindergartenTraining Department. Boys and girls were not allowed in the library at the same time, using an every other day schedule.

1927 The “stacks” were added in order to allow a total of 75,000 volumes. In the beginning only seniors were allowed in the stacks. All other students would request that a book be retrieved for them.

1964 As the library continued to outgrow its facilities, plans were made to construct a new building and demolish the original library built in 1889. The decision was made to maintain the stacks added in the 1920’s. These still exist today on the south side of the building. The new library building now had the capacity to hold 120,000 volumes.

1995 Once again space was in great demand and with a generous donation from the Colina family an addition was added to the west side of the building. This increased the library’s capacity to hold over 275,000 volumes.
