Each year, we offer WCC students an opportunity to honor someone from their high school who played a significant role in their academic journey.
The winner of the 2024 WCC Bridge Award is Melissa Jodway of Sand Creek Community Schools.
Jodway was nominated by Mechatronics student Bryce Hildebrandt, who says his former teacher "has been the foundation and key to many struggling students succeeding both academically and personally. Whether you simply needed help finding ways to study, or needed to find the motivation or reason to keep waking up in the morning, you could always count on Ms. Jodway to help.”
WCC thanks all teachers and counselors who inspire students to succeed!

🎊 HAPPY 60th ANNIVERSARY TO US! 🥂
The founding of Washtenaw Community College officially took place January 15, 1965. On that cold, snowy winter day, Washtenaw County residents trudged to the polls and voted overwhelmingly to establish the two-year college and elect its first Board of Trustees.
The vote was a 2-to-1 margin in favor that truly reflected the community’s support for this new type of college in a county long dominated by big, traditional four-year universities.
In so many ways, the founding of WCC then is what guides WCC today. Early studies in the late 1950s and early 1960s showed that county educators and employers recognized the need to create and sustain a workforce with strong technical skills.
Forward-thinking community leaders understood that need and worked tirelessly to move the process from concept to college.
As the years have passed, WCC has continued to meet business and industry needs for an even more highly skilled workforce. Few back then could have imagined the pace of change in technology witnessed in the last decades of the 20th century and first decade and a half of the 21st century.

Unveiling a lovely addition to the second floor of the Crane Liberal Arts & Sciences Building.
The new periodic table display is dedicated to long-time WCC chemistry faculty member Gary Van Genderen, who designed, built and maintained the collection of elements for many years before he retired in 2007.
Van Genderen passed away in 2022 and the new display is a fitting memorial to him and his time at WCC. We're very grateful that his wife, Susan Janiczek, was able to join us for the unveiling earlier this week.
