“…They actually had French flags on every seat, so you had tens of thousands of French flags waving at the same time. An absolutely beautiful sight. At first, I was laughing that I didn’t know the chants, but most of the chants just were forms of “Allez!” (go!) and the rhyming “Français” (French), “Chanter!” (sing!), and “Gagner” (win) being called with different rhythms. I certainly had it all figured out by the end. What also was great was that “Go Blue!” actually works in Stade de France as well! “Allez les Bleus!” means literally Go Blue, and is what the French say to support their national team as well! I Felt right at home… Allez les Bleus!”

Meet Karen! Mechanical Engineering, studying at the University of Manchester, UK.

“I got talking with some French exchange students… the conversation was so interesting! We discussed what it is like growing up in our respective countries and some big opinions or viewpoints that come with it. We talked about some views or stereo types that our respective countries have about the other person’s. And we talked about all the traveling we want to do this semester and in future years. I found it so interesting and refreshing; learning from and listening to others from different backgrounds might be on my list of favorite things to do.”

Our staff at IPE is closely monitoring the invasion of Ukraine, and like so many Wolverines, receive each report with deep sadness and frustration at the continued violence. Our hearts are with the people of Ukraine and our deepest sympathies go out to all who have been affected by these events. IPE's mission is built on international experiences to develop and foster a global worldview as part of engineering education. To our Michigan Engineers who've expressed interest in what they can do, we encourage you to look for Mary Sue Coleman's message for ways to help as well as educational events.

Right now, U-M does not expect the situation in the Ukraine to directly impact any of our IPE study abroad programs in Europe. We continue to prioritize students' safety as we work to help students navigate their goals of international experience.

“I felt more confident in the grocery store because I had been through so much cultural change just in those few hours, that a few french labels didn’t really scare me anymore. And, I was fine to speak the basic french I do know at the cash register and everything.”

“One of the best parts of moving abroad has been meeting all of the wonderful new people. Our university puts on various events for us to meet people such as picnics, day trips, and other events. During the day trip to Segovia, I had the chance to meet some wonderful people from France, Argentina, Spain, and other states in the U.S.”
