The University of Michigan Department of Astronomy started in 1854, with the hiring of the first PhD faculty member and the installation or the first major research instrument, the Meridian Circle telescope in the Detroit Observatory. More than a century and a half latter, our faculty are leaders in their fields, with access to some of the best instuments in the world.

Open houses are free, inclusive opportunities to learn more about astronomy and experience the universe firsthand. At each open house, members of SAS operate the telescopes and the planetarium of the Angell Hall Observatory. Visitors can view astronomical objects through the 8" and 0.4m telescopes
