This week, LSU College of Engineering Dean Vicki Colvin participated in a panel discussion at the Digital Twin Symposium, hosted by Digi-Twin Global , an entity of Forte and Tablada, Inc.

Joey Coco, President of Forte and Tablada, Inc. and LSU Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering alumnus and MBA graduate, emphasized LSU’s critical role in advancing digital twin technology:
💬 “The symposium features some of LSU's assets in this area and builds an ecosystem within the architecture/engineering community and continued collaborations with LSU given LSU’s advancement with Digital Twins.”

Bryan Jones, Mid Atlantic President of HNTB, one of the event’s sponsors, highlighted the growing impact of Digital Twin technology:
💬 “The opportunity has never been greater for decision makers and innovators of all kinds to invest in these cutting-edge technologies and create smarter, stronger systems.”

LSU Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering PhD graduate Md Manik Mia has tackled a major environmental challenge—above-ground storage tank (AST) failures during hurricanes and floods. His research identifies design improvements to reduce oil spills, protect communities, and strengthen industry resilience against extreme weather.

Mia’s findings offer practical solutions to safeguard our environment and petrochemical infrastructure.

This week, NATRX (co-founded by LSU Biological & Agricultural Engineering alumnus Tyler Ortego) and partner company danos hosted Dean Vicki Colvin from the LSU College of Engineering and Dean Clint Willson from the LSU College of the Coast & Environment to showcase their innovation in coastal restoration.

Tyler was able to show the deans firsthand how they’re using "Cajun Coral" as a nature-based solution to combat erosion and promote the growth of wildlife habitats.

LSU Biological and Agricultural Engineering Assistant Professor Bruno Rego is partnering with Dr. Jorge Castellanos at Our Lady of the Lake to develop AI tools that can detect heart valve diseases earlier and more accurately. This groundbreaking project, supported by a CAP (Collaboration in Action Program) Award, could change how we diagnose and treat aortic stenosis and mitral regurgitation.

You have a great future ahead, Nicolas!

LSU Petroleum Engineering

Nicolas Manica left his native Brazil to study petroleum engineering at LSU. Although his academic journey is just beginning, he’s already found endless opportunities for leadership, research, and cultural exchange.

"I truly believe this university is a mix of everything I see as part of a great university," Manica says. "It has many resources to support the students, investments in research and facilities, and a really nice social scene.”

Funded by a $300,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) grant, LSU Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Assistant Professor Yen-Fang Su is working to advance infrastructure monitoring using strategically placed self-sensing cementitious composites (SSCCs).

This innovation promises more accurate monitoring, resilience against natural hazards and the creation of smart structures that can sense potential failures and alert us before they happen.
