The California Jazz Conservatory (CJC) is an independent and accredited music conservatory, completely devoted to the study and performance of jazz. CJC offers BM, AA and MM (2021) degrees in Jazz Studies; and The Jazzschool at CJC with Classes, Workshops, Camps, Intensives and an acclaimed Young Musicians Program.
CJC also presents concerts year-round in two intimate venues, featuring visiting artists, students and faculty. In addition to its educational facilities, CJC hosts The Jazzcaffé, offering light food and beverage service; and the CJC Bookstore, offering jazz-related reading, listening and learning materials.
Founded in 1997 by CJC President Susan Muscarella as The Jazzschool, a community education program, the institution earned accreditation in 2014 and has now grown to occupy two buildings on Addison Street, located in the heart of Berkeley’s vibrant Downtown Arts District.
The CJC degree program faculty includes many of the San Francisco Bay Area’s finest artists/educators who offer a proven track record of transforming musicians into artists. Faculty includes Dr. Jeff Denson (Dean of Instruction), Laurie Antonioli, Dr. Anthony Brown, John Gove, Erik Jekabson, Dr. Jason Levis, Frank Martin, Dr. Aaron Mobley, Dr. Susan Muscarella, Edward Simon, Marcos Silva, Dr. Chris Sullivan, Dr. Michael Zilber, Dann Zinn.
Notable CJC alumni include Nick DeRyss, Michael Echaniz, Ian Faquini, Tyler Harlow, Henry Moser, Shimpei Ogawa, Susana Pineda, Lu Salcedo, Chris Sullivan, Scott Thompson, Dillon Vado.
The Jazzschool at CJC offers instrumentalists and vocalists of all ages and skill levels a broad spectrum of performance ensembles, lectures, workshops and private instruction. Classes and Workshops are designed for the professional musician, the serious student and the jazz aficionado seeking personal enrichment. The Jazzschool Young Musicians Program offers younger musicians a comfortable and supportive environment to learn and enhance their skills.
