How can we better prepare grad students for the challenges of scientific research? A $500k National Science Foundation grant awarded to UC Berkeley aims to do just that by developing a new curriculum focused on peer review and science communication. Led by Sarah Klass, postdoctoral fellow in the Lab at UC Berkeley and the Joint Bioenergy Institute, the project will equip students with essential skills, and the materials will be made accessible worldwide.

The proposed curriculum builds upon the success that the journal Rapid Reviews\Infectious Diseases (RR\ID) has had in making rigorous peer review faster and more efficient. Berkeley Public Health professor Stefano M. Bertozzi is the journal's editor-in-chief.

A study from UC Berkeley and Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health found toxic metals like arsenic, lead, and cadmium in tampons from various brands. These metals pose health risks due to the high absorption rate of vaginal skin.

The first-of-its-kind study was led by Jenni A. Shearston, a postdoctoral scholar at the UC Berkeley School of Public Health and UC Berkeley’s Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management. Said Shearston, “I really hope that manufacturers are required to test their products for metals, especially for toxic metals."
