“When you start fighting, it encourages a lot of others to do it, too.” ✨

Ed Roberts, born on this day in 1939, was:

🐻 The first Cal student with severe disabilities

🗣️ A trailblazing advocate for accessibility in education

💙 Called the “father of independent living”

Roberts contracted polio at age 14 and was paralyzed from the neck down.

At Cal, he was a founder of the Physically Disabled Students’ Program, which gave rise to the Center for Independent Living.

Each year, we celebrate Jan. 23 as Ed Roberts Day.

“Hate is too great a burden to bear. I have decided to love.” 🕊️

Martin Luther King Jr. was born on this day in 1929.

King spent his life fighting inequality, earning the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

In this 1967 photograph, King delivers his final large-scale Bay Area speech, on the steps of UC Berkeley’s Sproul Hall.

The Library’s materials on King include records of the FBI’s efforts to undermine the civil rights leader.

Savio’s passion and eloquence made him the figurehead of UC Berkeley’s Free Speech Movement.

The movement revolutionized activism on campus, and inspired students fighting for change across the country.

The UC Berkeley Library is preserving the history of the cause, 60 years later.
