Celebrate Cal’s history of excellence by diving into the inspiring stories of our Olympians.

From track and field stars to gold-winning crews, UC Berkeley athletes have made their mark on the world stage, bringing home medals and embodying the Golden Bear spirit.

Together, the athletes pictured here have won 28 of the 121 gold medals earned by Cal Olympians to date.

Duster’s favorite quote, “Pass it on,” was told to him by a mentor.

A grandson of Ida B. Wells, Duster has lived up to that motto. His contributions as a sociologist, Cal professor, and leader of UC Berkeley’s Diversity Project are felt today.

Miné Okubo was born on this day in 1912. ✍️

The late writer and artist was among the Japanese Americans incarcerated during World War II.

Okubo:

🖊 Expressed her experience through art

🐻 Was a UC Berkeley alum

📘 Penned a graphic memoir, “Citizen 13660”

While incarcerated, Okubo served as art editor of “Trek,” a quarterly literary magazine produced at the prison camp in Topaz, Utah. She provided many of the magazine’s cover illustrations.
