The New York Film Academy (NYFA) offers degree, 1 & 2 year conservatory programs, short-term workshops, and youth camps in a variety of visual storytelling, visual arts, and performing arts disciplines. Those disciplines may include: Filmmaking, Acting for Film, Producing, Photography, Screenwriting, Cinematography, Documentary Filmmaking, Game Design, 3D Animation & VFX, Musical Theatre, Broadcas

It was a pleasure to have LeVar Burton as a guest speaker at NYFA LA.

Our students enjoyed hearing from the actor, director, producer, and writer. He’s a cultural icon whose incredible journey includes winning 7 NAACP Awards, a Peabody, a Grammy, and 15 Emmys, including a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Inaugural Children's & Family Emmys, and a National Humanities Medal.

From his groundbreaking role as Kunta Kinte in Roots to his beloved position as host of Reading Rainbow, LeVar has inspired generations. His work in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Picard further solidifies his legacy in television.

With his production company, LeVar Burton Entertainment, he continues to develop projects that foster empathy, champion diversity, and build community.

Andres Revo (AFA Acting for Film alum, LA campus) won Best Actor in a Mexican Fiction Feature Film at the Mexican Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia (FICM) for his performance in Hombres Íntegros (Fine Young Men), directed by Alejandro Andrade Pease. 🎭✨

Rouven Gueissaz (6-Week Documentary Filmmaking alum) took home the Audience Award at the Tallgrass Film Festival for his film Finding My Voice. 🎥👏

As we eagerly await the movie release, let's take a trip down memory lane with NYFA’s Chair of Musical Theatre, Kristy Cates! 🎭 Kristy appeared as Elphaba in Wicked, appearing on Broadway, Chicago and the first national tour.

"Just when I thought my life with Wicked couldn’t get any more magical than being in the original Broadway cast and then playing Elphaba, along comes this beautiful movie adaptation! I had the honor of screening the movie with my original cast mates and my sweet daughter…and let me just say that Jon Chu is an absolute visionary, and I am so proud to be part of the Wicked legacy!" says Kristy.

NYFA has been proud to partner with Sichuan University of Media and Communications (SUMC) for over 10 years. Recently, we welcomed more than 100 SUMC students from China, who showcased their cinematic projects and performed traditional Chinese music and dance in the NYFA theater. 🎬🎶

The students then explored the Universal Studios backlot, participating in hands-on workshops in cinematography, steadicam, directing, and acting, all guided by our talented NYFA instructors. 🎥✨

This Veterans Day, we're highlighting Andrea (Dré) Gilkey Carr, a student at our NYFA Los Angeles campus, whose journey has been one of resilience, passion, and dedication. 🇺🇸

“Why did you choose NYFA?” “Wow! I love this question. I chose New York Film Academy (NYFA) after dreaming about it since high school in Louisville, Kentucky. I remember being captivated by a NYFA postcard, but my community wasn’t supportive of my Hollywood dreams. Instead, I began studying at Christian universities, completed degrees in English Writing, Religion, and Divinity, and ultimately joined the U.S. Navy as a Chaplain.

After an unexpected medical retirement from the Navy, I faced a tough reality: my 20-year career plans were cut short. But with the support of the Post-9/11 GI Bill, I chose to revisit my dreams in the arts. NYFA’s hands-on approach, commitment to diversity, and supportive community drew me in. The incredible staff welcomed me—and my daughter, Rael—with open arms, making it feel like home. It feels like destiny brought me full circle to the dream I had back in 1999.”

Andrea has since completed NYFA’s 1-year Screenwriting Program and is currently pursuing her MFA in Photography. 🎓📸

We’re thrilled to celebrate the incredible achievements of our NYFA Documentary alumni making waves in the industry!

First up, we celebrate New York alum Nick Kochman for his impressive work as an Associate Producer on "Floyd Abrams: Speaking Freely," which has been nominated for an Outstanding Politics and Government Documentary Emmy.

We also want to give a shoutout to New York alum Adebowale Williams, who has been chosen to represent NYFA at the DOCNYC festival in their 2024 DOC NYC U slate! He is among just 12 filmmakers selected from various NYC schools, with his screening scheduled for November 21, 2024, at 1:00 PM at Village East by Angelika.

Lastly, New York and Los Angeles alumna Lucía Florez has earned recognition with her film, "Shirampari: Legacies of the River," selected for the PBS series POV! This impactful film is set to premiere on November 12, 2024, as part of the competitive POV Shorts program.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month one last time with our incredible NYFA alum, Marian Fragoso for their bi-coastal film festival weekend! 🎉 Marian's film "FRUITS AND VEGGIES THAT HELP YOUR PROJECTIONS" was screened in two film festivals back to back. They started their weekend in New York for the 9th Annual Imagine This Women’s International Film Festival, then hopped on a plane and headed to Los Angeles for the New Filmmakers LA festival the following day.
