UTC Special Collections is working to digitize the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) of Chattanooga records, representing over 100 years of women's history in the city.

In 1887, the WCTU of Chattanooga organized to create an affordable housing option for the city's young, self-supporting women. What began as rented rooms at the corner of Broad and Eighth streets, the Working Girls Home quickly expanded, eventually moving to 615 Lindsay Street in 1928, where it operated as the Frances Willard Home until the 1970s.

Digitization of the WCTU of Chattanooga collection is made possible by a grant from the Tennessee Historical Records Advisory Board with funding made available by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission

Last week marked the official start of the 114th Tennessee State Legislature! Dr. Tommie F. Brown, whose papers we’re processing in UTC Special collections, served from the 97th to the 107th general assembly of the Tennessee House.

Dr. Brown began her impressive 20-year legislative career in 1992. She is one of the only 16 Black women to ever serve in the Tennessee State Legislature and the first Black woman to represent the 28th District in the Tennessee House of Representatives.

Over the course of her legislative career, Dr. Brown sponsored legislation on a variety of topics, including education, racial discrimination, and voting rights. She worked diligently to improve her community and to ensure democratic representation for all voices.

Support for “‘One of the Black Legislators’: Providing Access to the Tommie F. Brown Papers” is provided by an Archival Projects grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission
