Kinesiology student Ian Kim looks forward to Friday nights when he helps local children with disabilities discover the joy of physical activities, whether it’s soccer, freeze tag or leaping off a diving board.

The IMPACT program has given Ian invaluable lessons about health professions, too – lessons he might not have learned if not for scholarships, which afford him the time to volunteer instead of clocking more hours at his job.

College of Health Instructor and alumna Ashley Vaughn, MPH ’21 received the Phyllis S. Lee Award at this year’s Oregon State University Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Breakfast on January 20.

“Where there is struggle lies opportunity for change,” Ashley says. “We can’t do this work alone. We must be in community with one another and with students to understand what they want their role to be and to help them master some of the skills necessary to achieve that role. Both energize me and bring me hope."

Get inside the mind of researcher Dave Dallas. Dave Dallas is the endowed director of the Moore Family Center for Whole Grain Foods, Nutrition and Preventive Health. His research explores how milk impacts infants and works to optimize their health.

"We mostly focus on milk's hundreds of bioactive proteins. We examine which of these survive during digestion and which release functional components called peptides.
We then study how these components interact with cells in the gut, including intestinal epithelial cells, immune cells and bacteria. We have identified many milk peptides with functions including antibacterial, immunomodulatory and antioxidant.

I was inspired to focus on milk because it is the product of over 250 million years of evolution to nourish the infant. No other food is like that. We can learn so much about nutrition by studying milk."

Outside of work, Dave likes training and playing with his dog, as well as gardening, reading, hiking and traveling.

Our Story

The future of public health We all know the future is not health care. It’s health. More specifically, it’s the 90 percent of factors that contribute to our health – our biology, our environment, our social interactions and our lifestyle and behavior. This makes us uniquely positioned to improve the health and wellness of people, families and communities, lower healthcare costs and affect health system change. As a unique community of problem-solvers, and through teaching, research and collaboration across our college, university, state and world, we are leading the change in how people think about and ensure health across the lifespan, from infants to seniors. We affect change through teaching students who become leaders in their profession, through our research that affects behavior change and policy and through our collaboration with communities in finding solutions to their most difficult health challenges.
