As an undergraduate student, Jonah Siekmann worked with professors Alan Fern and Jonathan Hurst on applying neural networks to robotics which resulted in a paper published in Robotics: Science and Systems. He will be returning to Oregon State University in the fall to start a master’s degree program in computer science. This video shows Jonah performing walking tests on Cassie using the neural network controller he developed that was trained in simulation and transferred to hardware.

Cassie took some time off while Oregon State University halted in person research. Recently, we have been approved to return to running experiments with stri...

Delivered by Oregon State University Ecampus, the online postbacc program in computer science has seen steady growth since its inception in 2012. The current health crisis has not slowed that growth. In fact, there were more students admitted to the program for this summer than any previous summer.

Ismail Uluer is a doctoral student in electrical and computer engineering, who transferred to Oregon State University when his advisor, Tom Weller, became the EECS school head.

Ismail's research involves designing a antenna to assist a special technique developed for cancerous treatment by heating tumors with microwave energy. This technique may allow doctors to treat tumors by inserting a gene into the patient’s cells instead of using drugs or surgery.

Following graduation, Ismail plans to pursue a career in academia because he enjoys being in the research environment and contributing to technology development.

As promised, our spotlight for this week is Sowmya Jujjuri, our awesome secretary!

My name is Sowmya Jujjuri, I am the Secratary of ACM-W and a second-year computer science student. Last year, I was an Engineering Intern at Puppet and this summer I will be a Software Engineering Intern on the Development Tool Kit team at New Relic. Currently, I am an undergraduate research assistant at CHARISMA lab working on multi-robot comedy. I also enjoy dancing with OSU bhangra as a member on their team . It was amazing to see how much ACM-W grew this year, and I would love to see it grow even more for years to come!

Hope you guys are holding up! We are almost to the end of the quarter!💕

Ali Haider, a doctoral student in electrical and computer engineering with a focus on energy systems, says he was born to be an electrical engineer. "It’s like a painter never becomes interested in painting at a certain stage in life, rather their art was always in them," he said.

He is thankful for the dedicated faculty at Oregon State University, especially his supervisor, Professor Ted Brekken, who "certainly knows how to be a teacher and bring out students’ hidden talents."

Ali is working to design electrical engineering systems to extract optimum power from ocean waves, and to design power electronics interface systems to integrate this power with the utility power grid. After he graduates, he will be going on to a postdoc position with Berkeley Lab.

Many thanks to Leanne Lai and all the IT experts in the College of Engineering - Oregon State University who are rising to the challenge as technology “first responders,” working around the clock to smooth the transition to remote teaching, remote meetings, and remote living.

As Oregon State University scrambled to prepare for home-based remote teaching in the spring term, the faculty turned for help, in great numbers, to the information technology staff. They needed advice about setting up remote desktops, troubleshooting virtual networks, Wi-Fi connectivity, and guidan...
