Commencement was only a few weeks ago, but James Phillips has had his eyes' set on the skies for a while now. James is building on his new Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies degree in Communication and Public Policy to expand his research with a focus on space. In particular, he will be expanding his master's level research on a global scale and exploring intercultural space program relations as part of the University of Oregon's Communication and Media Studies doctoral program. There were many deciding factors for James in pursuing a Ph.D., “but it was largely rooted in my love of teaching that emerged as a result of my time as a graduate student at Oregon State. Continuing my graduate education enables me to continue working with the up-and-coming generations while performing research in a field I love, which strikes me as a rather nice career!”

His decision isn't as far out as one might think if you read his master's thesis: "To Boldly Go: Understanding the Frontier's Role in Shaping Public Perceptions of NASA and Space Exploration.” Shortened to SPACE, James looks at communication strategies between NASA and the public, agencies’ efforts to curb misinformation, and current space communication narratives.

During his time as a grad student, James was a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) for the communication department. He encourages those seeking a master’s degree to secure an assistantship. “As a graduate employee, a teaching assistant, or a research assistant, your financial stability is further bolstered, and you are often given opportunities to work alongside individuals you would not otherwise get to spend time with, which gives you invaluable skills for use inside and outside the classroom.”

James remarked on the common notion within graduate school of comparing yourself to others. “You might hear a colleague discussing their research or a paper they’re working on or a conference they’re going to…Success in grad school lies in strong collaboration with those around you rather than treating them as competitors.”

Amy Wyman (She/Her) is a fifth-year Ph.D. candidate in Civil Engineering at Oregon State.

Who is the one person in your academic career who impacted you the most? For Amy Wyman the answer is clear — Dr. David Hurwitz. Dr. Hurwitz was Amy’s Honors College thesis advisor during her undergraduate years at Oregon State University while pursuing a degree in civil engineering.

“I had such a good experience working with him as an undergraduate student that I wanted to work with him again as a graduate student” she said. “He was the one who suggested I consider pursuing a career in academia, and I hope to one day inspire students as he has inspired me.”

She continues to work with Dr. Hurwitz on her graduate research and recently received OSU’s Excellence in Undergraduate Research Mentoring by a Graduate Student Award, among other recognitions and scholarships.

“My advisor knew about the award and helped nominate me with the support and encouragement of another undergraduate student in our lab, Elsa Moreno-Rangel, in this cycle. I wrote two short essays, sent over my CV, and my advisor helped collect letters of recommendation for me.”

The biggest research challenge for Amy came during the COVID-19 pandemic because much of her research involves human participants and observing travel behavior. Like many others during the pandemic, Amy and her colleagues were able to adapt their research to maintain safety.

“We started using UV light to disinfect lab equipment, placed numerous HEPA filters in shared spaces, and, at one point, we were even handing out intercept surveys to passing cyclists with a trash grabber to maintain social distancing.”

Outside of her lab work, Amy enjoys cooking and the outdoors.

“I also love being outside, and one thing I feel really lucky I got to do while in my grad program is backpack the John Muir Trail. It was the most intensely physical thing I’ve ever done. Even so, I want to do it again.”

Lianelys “Lia” Cabrera Martinez (She/her/hers/ella) is a second-year Ph.D. student in psychological sciences at Oregon State University.

As a first-generation student from Cuba, Lia has always had an active interest in social issues surrounding Latinx communities. It was during her undergraduate studies that she met her major advisor, Dr. Ivan Carbajal. Lia has grown close to her major advisor over these last few years, “I consider this mentor-mentee dynamic as the perfect match, which has helped tremendously in my grad school journey by providing unconditional support.” Her current research looks at bicultural identity development, social cognition, critical consciousness and discrimination, and how these aspects can impact Latinx communities.

Lia recently received the Lenore Bayley Graduate Scholarship, which is awarded to students at the recommendation of faculty or department chairs. She also helps run the social media for the National Latinx Psychological Association ().

Like many grad students, Lia cites imposter syndrome and finding community among the hardships she has faced as a grad student. “Obviously, I’ve already found a little family with the PILAS (Psychophysiology, Intersectionality, Latinx, & Acculturative Science) lab, and more specifically, I’ve helped develop a small community support group within the School of Psychological Sciences. However, I’m still trying to fight the imposter syndrome but unfortunately is something that never goes away.” However, Lia is thankful for her support groups for helping her through difficult times. “Still, my little familia at OSU makes me feel at home and deserving of every accomplishment.”

Nick Cruz (He/Him) is a first-year graduate student pursuing a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering at Oregon State.

Growing up in Spokane, WA, Nick came to OSU not just because of the location, but to pursue his undergraduate degree in the Honors College as well. “A beautiful campus, great engineering program, and the right balance between being too close to home to feel like a change and being too far from home to visit over a long weekend. The Honors College was also a large draw and I’m glad I stuck with it to complete my Honors thesis.” While this is Nick’s first year at OSU, he is also part of the accelerated master’s program which he began his senior year of his undergrad.

Nick is a graduate research assistant, working in a research lab. The position covers tuition in addition to a monthly stipend, which Nick intends to use to help fund his studies. After graduating, Nick hopes to enter the automotive engineering industry, specifically in the area of vehicle development.

Although Nick hasn’t gotten too far into his research yet, he’s begun working with his major advisors toward a focus of study. “I will be working with my advisor, Dr. Piacenza, another professor researching coastal engineering, Dr. Yim, and a Ph.D. student in his lab at the Hinsdale Wave Lab to design and test a wave-energy-conversion (WEC) device to be used in conditions similar to the Oregon Coast.” Nick was excited to work with Dr. Piacenza for his thesis, not only because he was able to work with him for his honors thesis, but also due to his experience as technical lead for Global Formula Racing at OSU.

One of the biggest challenges that Nick has faced so far has been in deciding his research topic and the time frame to complete the research. “The freedom and flexibility of grad school is great in that it allows you to tailor it to your interests, but it can be daunting to be faced with so many choices. I’m excited, though, to see where it takes me and what I can achieve.”

Michelle Borges is a first-year graduate student pursuing a M.S. degree in Agricultural Education at Oregon State.

Michelle has the unique position of being the first student at OSU to specialize in agricultural sciences and natural resource communication within her Agricultural Education degree. This program has been “the perfect combination of both of my passions of communications and agriculture” for Michelle, with the agricultural communication field on the rise.

Agriculture has been an important part of Michelle’s life since she was a child. “I grew up in an agriculturally-focused community and participated in organizations like 4-H and FFA which sparked my passion for agriculture." While being the first and only person in her concentration has been an adjustment, Michelle has enjoyed helping to create the learning experience for future students. “Since my classes and projects are so new, there are some growing pains that the department and I have gone through but overall, it has been so exciting to explore the endless possibilities that this masters in Ag Comm can look like.”

Michelle is the founder of the Agricultural Communications of Tomorrow (ACT) club, a national organization for those interested in agricultural communication. The goal of the club “is to work with other undergraduate students to build a sense of community and network for anyone interested in this career path.” In terms of her own personal studies, she has been collaborating with her advisors from CSU Chico and OSU, as well as preparing for academic conferences later this year.

The hope for Michelle is for more students to join the agricultural communication discipline in the coming years. “I enjoy the well-roundedness that this field of study provides you with strong writing skills, public speaking skills, and learning about content creation by working with stakeholders and industry partners. Ag Comm may be a smaller field, but it is growing dramatically and there is a strong tight knit network within it.”
