🐝 Meet Adeline a huge fan of bees & pollinators, as well as a world traveller! 🌏

She has loved all of the opportunities provided to her at OSU: visiting amazing spots around the globe, getting hands-on experience at the OSU Honey Bee Lab, research opportunities, and so much more! She encourages all new students to take advantage of the opportunities and to go on the adventure.

Oregon & California's wine industry is under threat from two viral diseases: Grapevine red blotch and leafroll. These viruses reduce yields, shorten vineyard lifespans, and impact wine flavor—sometimes taking years to show their full effects.

A new report by NASEM Earth and Life Sciences reviews what we know about these two diseases and offers solutions that could help reduce the spread and economic impact of these diseases.

Stuart Reitz, Director of OSU Malheur Experiment Station, served on the committee: “These viral diseases are not just a critical threat to winegrape production in California; their impact is being felt in Oregon and many other winegrape production regions of the world.”

Kim Anderson, an environmental chemist at OSU, led development of innovative silicone wristbands that detect personal exposure to plastic-related chemicals. These wristbands absorb chemicals from the environment, allowing researchers to analyze the types and amounts of pollutants individuals encounter daily.

Recently, the International Pollutants Elimination Network, or IPEN, invited 12 high-ranking United Nations officials to wear the wristbands in an experiment. The project focused on globally unregulated chemicals found in plastic and plastic manufacturing that are thought to be harmful to health.

The results showed the U.N. officials had each been exposed to more than 30 different chemicals.

“It made me think: ‘If I’m exposed to these levels, what about my kids?’” Mr. Orellana said.

Check out the fun and interesting past of this unique apple! 🍏

This red-fleshed apple goes by a few different names and has a murky past, but is rising in popularity, especially with PNW cider-makers.

“With apple genetics there’s such a mixed bag of variability and different turnouts that can happen.” OSU's Kody Transue

🌶️ If you haven't heard already, OSU has developed heat-free habaneros! 🌶️

These 2 new varieties offer a mild alternative to the usually spicy pepper. They are aptly named “Mild Thing” and “Hotta Notta."

Find out more about how Jim Myers & his team of vegetable breeders produced these delicious alternatives in this article.

🐄 🔥OSU researchers in eastern Oregon are investigating how smoke affects health, noting many negative symptoms like nasal discharge and eye irritation that then lead to sickness.

Preliminary findings indicate increased stress markers and immune responses in exposed cows. The ongoing study aims to develop effective interventions to protect livestock during wildfire seasons. Next season, Juliana Ranches will provide some of the cattle in her experiment with a solution that will help reduce water loss and improve hydration.

🐝 🐝A new study conducted by a recent OSU grad shows that an existing tool used to monitor honeybee pesticide exposure fails to capture important data.

For the study, Emily Carlson & her colleagues monitored the pollen collect, which can be distinguished by species and identified by unique protein structures. To get the data, Carlson collected pollen from hundreds of hives across various crops.

“We have had hazard quotient for at least 10 years, and this is the first study that ever asked the question: How many sites do we need to monitor to get a good understanding of how hazard changes?”

All OSU students are encouraged to apply for the upcoming ASOSU Washington D.C lobbying trip!

Each year, the ASOSU - Associated Students of Oregon State University brings 12 students to our nation’s capital to speak with Oregon’s Senators and Representatives about issues that are relevant and important to students. This year, we will be focusing our advocacy efforts on affordable housing, healthcare, funding for higher education, and environmental issues.

Outside of lobbying and advocacy, trip participants will have opportunities to explore all that Washington D.C has to offer and to learn more about the political process. All students–regardless of year, major, college, or background–should apply for this amazing, all-expenses paid experience.

Applications are due on December 20th at midnight (PST) by visiting https://asosu.oregonstate.edu/student-gov/executive/Initiatives/dc-trip
