🎙️ Dean Tom DeLuca joined KUOW Public Radio's Soundside to discuss the Trump administration’s move to open more national forest land for logging - and why preservation alone is no longer a viable forest management strategy in the age of climate change.

Tune in to hear his expert perspective on forest management, reducing wildfire risk and what this decision could mean for our forests and communities.

"Simultaneously downsizing the federal forest workforce while upping the activity on federal land creates a barrier to success," Dean DeLuca shares.

Join us for the final 2025 Starker Lecture! This talk will highlight the transformation of the Northern Colorado Fireshed Collaborative from a small group into a network of over 30 organizations tackling wildfire risks along the Colorado Front Range. They’re now expanding their efforts to include stream restoration and watershed health, showing how innovation and teamwork can tackle today’s biggest environmental challenges.

Forests sustain us — but can we sustain them?

For billions, forests provide clean water, traditional medicines and vital nutrition. At the same time, increasing global demand for foods like avocados and palm oil drives widespread deforestation. This , we’re exploring that conservation conundrum.

The footage in this video was captured during our annual study abroad program, "Oil Palms and Orangutans: Forest Conservation in Malaysian Borneo." Students who participate in this two-week experience learn firsthand about the complex conservation challenges our forests face around the world: https://beav.es/p7F

COF associate professor of wildlife ecology Jim Rivers has been awarded the prestigious Bullard Fellowship from Harvard University to advance his groundbreaking research on native pollinators in working forests.

During his fellowship at Harvard Forest, Professor Rivers will analyze preliminary data from field studies at the OSU Research Forests and develop new research on how blue orchard bees respond to natural and human-caused changes in forest ecosystems.

Congratulations to Professor Rivers on this well-deserved achievement! Wishing you success in your fellowship and research. 🐝

In the Pacific Northwest, we're lucky to have abundant access to nature. But even here — and especially in parts of the world where access is more limited — protecting sensitive natural ecosystems from the impacts of recreation and tourism requires a measured approach.

To discuss how land management practices can support sustainable outdoor recreation, Dr. Ashley D’Antonio, associate professor in nature-based recreation management and associate department head in the college's Forest Ecosystems and Society department, joined host Lauren Grand on the Forestry and Natural Resources Extension - Oregon State University podcast "In the Woods." Listen in at https://beav.es/NZx.

“We can use recreation ecology studies to understand where people are going, how they interact with that sensitive resource, and then hopefully use tools like education and outreach to help visitors mitigate their impacts in those places,” shares Dr. D’Antonio.

“You are grounded in very important work – work that makes a difference. You will find a way to continue that work.” ~ Terry Baker, Society of American Foresters CEO, said during his lecture, “Our Forests are not Limited by Controversy or Uncertainty.”

Baker’s visit to the College of Forestry and his lecture last week came at an opportune time, given all the change and uncertainty we are weathering — from questions regarding the availability of federal research funding to the terminations of COF alumni, colleagues and partners at federal agencies including the Forest Service, BLM, Dept. of the Interior and so many others. He reminded us that even in times of uncertainty, “the work is the work.” And while we can’t be certain of what’s next, there is certainly an abundance of work — very important work — that our students, faculty and staff are leading here at the college, and our alumni are leading around the world. We remain as dedicated as ever to fulfilling our mission, and that of OSU as a land grant institution, to expand pathways to higher education for all, pursue innovative research that considers diverse perspectives and multiple ways of knowing, and engage communities across the state, nation, world and political spectrum.

Floods, wildfires, drought — aquatic ecosystems are constantly shifting. Instead of resisting these natural changes, how can we work with them to improve conservation and management? 🤔

Join us at the second 2025 Starker Lecture to explore how restoring natural processes can boost ecosystem resilience, using the remarkable persistence of Pacific Salmon as an example.
