Even though we might not see much snow in Alabama, freezing temperatures can be a threat to food safety. Freezing temperatures can cause power outages to refrigerators and freezers just as summer storms do. To be prepared, here are some tips to keep your food from being frightful.

❄️ As with power outages in any season, keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible.
❄️ A full freezer can keep food frozen for up to 48 hours, while a half-full freezer lasts about 24 hours.
❄️ One key mistake to avoid if the power goes out in freezing temperatures is to try to use the winter weather as an outdoor refrigerator or freezer.
❄️ Check the temperature inside of your refrigerator and freezer. If any perishable food has been above 40°F for two hours or more, get rid of it.
