Dallas businessman and philanthropist Mike A. Myers has given a $2 million gift to Texas Woman’s stroke center to be used to expand research, patient and family services, and inter-professional training opportunities.

In recognition of the Myers gift, the Texas Woman’s University System Board of Regents on Friday renamed the center the Mike A. Myers Stroke Center.

“This gift is truly transformative,” said Dr. Jyutika Mehta, the Mike A. Myers Stroke Center’s director. “We will be able to grow significantly and support many more individuals and families who need neuro-rehabilitative support, assist those from bilingual backgrounds and continue to support those who are uninsured and underinsured. Additionally, this will allow the center to train many more students in cutting-edge, clinical and research-based protocols.”

The center, established in 1992 by Texas Woman’s University to provide specialized treatment for patients who experience a stroke or head injury, also conducts research and training for TWU graduate students. The center does not charge patients and is funded primarily through grants and contributions.

May is also Stroke Awareness Month. Symptoms of stroke include numbness, confusion, trouble walking or seeing, dizziness, and severe headache. Since these symptoms can be caused by many conditions, use the FAST test to help you react quickly:

F (Face): Is any part of the face drooping? Can the person having symptoms smile? Does the smile appear uneven?

A (Arms): Can the person lift their arms? Does one arm drift downward?

S (Speech): Is the person’s speech slurred or nonsensical?

T (Time): Remember that time is critical. If stroke is suspected, call 9-1-1 immediately.

With a top speed of six miles per hour, 20-year-old Watson Polk won’t be found racing down the back stretch of the local speedway. But that doesn’t mean he won’t try.

“Because I have a need,” Polk joked. “A need for speed.”

In the future, Polk, who lives in Aubrey, wants to work for Formula One Racing. Until then, nothing matches the thrill of his current job.

Polk was born with a rare metabolic disorder, Glutaric Acidemia type 1, or GA1. He lost all major motor skills at five months old. Despite the challenges, the disorder has in no way slowed him down.

With an augmentative and alternative communication device called eye gaze technology, Polk uses his eyes to piece together words and phrases on a screen, which then speaks for him. That’s how he ended up at the Texas Woman's University The Stroke Center - Dallas.

Dr. Mark Weber, an associate director in the School of Physical Therapy at Texas Woman's University - Dallas, took an abrupt turn early in his career that led him to a pioneering role in the field of sports physical therapy.
