โ€œI cannot be more thrilled that I now have the opportunity to maintain my full-time student status due to this scholarship award. This has relieved me of extra out-of-pocket expenses, which is a big deal for my family. I can now pursue my dreams full force.

I plan to pursue my bachelors and masters and eventually become a nurse practitioner. Becoming a nurse practitioner and giving back to my community is very important to me. I am a mother to three beautiful children, and I work two jobs. My youngest daughter has special needs and has been a huge part of my drive to further my nursing career and learn as much as possible. I am currently a Licensed Practical Nurse working full-time at Troy Regional Medical Center, and I work part-time through an agency for underprivileged youth that live in a state group home. I am furthering my education to become an RN and continue to grow as a nurse. My kids truly look up to the work ethic I have. We grew up working class, and life was a struggle. My goal is to change that for my children and give them a brighter future.โ€

"Receiving this scholarship is a blessing. I'm grateful to be part of a supportive community and excited to give back by serving as a nurse while continuing my education.

I graduated with a Practical Nursing degree from Wallace in December 2023. This spring and summer, I will complete prerequisite and general studies courses to pursue an Associate Degree in Nursing. Currently, I work on a surgical ortho/neuro-spine unit, caring for patients from knee and hip replacements to craniotomies. With my RN, I plan to work in an Intensive Care Unit, learning to care for patients with advanced illnesses.

As a first-generation student, a low-income single parent, and a caregiver to an uncle with special needs, a college degree is incredibly important to me. It allows me to provide my skills to serve others, take control of my life, and support myself and my loved ones."

"I am very blessed for someone to help me finish my journey with school. This scholarship allows me to provide food for my three boys at home.

When I finish Wallace, I'll continue to Troy for my bachelor's and then my master's. I want my children to know it's never too late to follow your dreams or start new ones.

I didn't pass the high school graduation exam, so I went to GED classes and eventually got my diploma. I was so proud. I enrolled in school but had to leave to raise my children. Now, I'm back to finish my degree. My children understand when I say 'mommy has school.' I'm very grateful and blessed to also teach the children at my church."

Bryant Mixon Scholarship

Associate Degree Nursing

โ€œI was overwhelmed with happiness when I received the scholarship. Knowing that I didn't have to worry about financial burden and I could focus on my studies gave me a sense of relief. These funds helped pay for my college credits and Nursing course. I also was able to purchase the required textbooks and computer programs needed for the Nursing program.

I plan on working in a trauma hospital while continuing my education and achieving my bachelor of science in nursing and hopefully continuing my education to pursue my Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist license.

I am originally from the state of Hawaii, one of the hardest states to get into Nursing school. I tried for ten years, while supporting my twin daughters as a single parent and working full-time as an emergency medical technician at a Level 2 trauma hospital. Nursing school seemed impossible and financially out of reach. I had set my dreams of becoming an RN aside. In 2022, I met my husband while he was stationed in Hawaii. He had orders to transfer to Fort Novosel, AL, and we left that November. I took a chance and applied to Wallace 's associate degree nursing program, and I was accepted. I was extremely happy, but nervous, about how I would be able to pay for school. Going to school full-time and being a parent to young children, I knew I wouldn't be able to work or contribute to my college tuition. This scholarship has not only allowed me to follow my dream of becoming a nurse, but it shows my children that you can accomplish anything at any age, even if it takes you longer than others. I am so thankful for the opportunities you have given to me and my family.โ€

โ€œI am so grateful for this scholarship. There is not enough time in between school obligations and studying for exams to dedicate to working to be able to afford the tuition and fees. Nursing has been my dream for the past 8 years, and I am not ready to give up on my dream. Receiving this scholarship will allow me to focus on my studies and be successful without the worry of having to earn extra money.โ€

โ€œI plan to continue my education at Wallace Community College to obtain my associate in nursing and then proceed further to obtain my bachelorโ€™s and master's in nursing. I have always enjoyed helping people; for a long time, I worked in healthcare, but I had always felt as if there was something more I could do to help those in need. I am a first-generation high school graduate as well as a first-generation college student. I am currently working as a Certified Nursing Assistant. I have volunteered with various organizations that pertained to helping the needy and environmental cleanup. I have also spent some time working with an organization called F.A.S.T. (Families And Schools Together).โ€

โ€œReceiving the scholarship award was an answered prayer. I am a completely self-funded student, working full-time to support a family of two school-age children. I am truly grateful for those who made this possible. Attending college as a mom, wife, and full-time employee is truly challenging, but the ability to be able to do so is a blessing. My schedule is brutal, but I tell myself that it will not be long now. Even while working on the weekends, I have managed to fit in volunteer opportunities like ringing the bell for the Salvation Army during the holidays every year. Completing my program is a great inspiration for me, my family, and my children. After graduating, I would love to continue on an education journey, but I will have two college funds to contribute to, and so I may not be able to continue. It is important that my children not have to worry about the things that I worried about and stopped me from fulfilling a dream.โ€

Welding Technology

โ€œThis scholarship has given me the comfort of knowing that I can attend school. I can also buy the books I need for my welding journey. I travel a bit to school and as a single father who also works two jobs, I have a lot of stress on me. Knowing that I got this scholarship helps take off a considerable amount of that stress. After my program, I plan to continue my education in welding technology. Once I complete school and get all my certifications, I plan on doing welding in the aerospace industry. It's a long road ahead, but I'm willing to do whatever it takes. Completing my welding certifications/degree means being able to provide a better future for my family. I will have a career I can be proud of and will love what I do everyday! I'm a first generation college student and I want to show my son that he can be so much more if he works for what he loves.โ€
