We are excited to announce that the School of Business is now the Donald G. Costello College of Business at George Mason University, as of November 1, in recognition of Mr. Costello’s legacy of supporting university students studying business and entrepreneurship.

Mr. Donald G. Costello was a renowned businessman in Northern Virginia who supported the ideals of student success, entrepreneurship, and economic development. Through this $50 million planned gift to George Mason University—the largest school naming gift in the 51-year history of our Northern Virginia-based university—the newly named Costello College of Business is extending the legacy of this forward-thinking entrepreneur whose creativity, hard work, and determination changed the lives of people around him.

This transformational gift establishes an endowment that will provide scholarships to undergraduate and graduate Donald G. Costello College of Business students to help prepare them for successful careers as entrepreneurs.

A new partnership agreement between City of Fairfax Government and George Mason University School of Business will extend the walls of the business school’s classrooms into the local business community, effectively creating “classroom beyond the classroom” learning opportunities for School of Business students. The George Mason University School of Business SOAR Initiative is a critical building block in George Mason University's efforts to advance social mobility, or an individual’s ability to improve their socio-economic status. U.S. News and World Report Best Colleges 2024 ranks George Mason University #1 on social mobility among public universities in Virginia.

The SOAR Initiative provides resources and training for aspiring entrepreneurs who are refugees and immigrants, currently in a low socio-economic status, or residing in rural and emerging communities.

Fairfax City Economic Development Authority (FCED) and George Mason University are working together to bring the "classroom beyond the classroom" to the City of Fairfax Government a collaborative effort that will bring fresh faces and new ideas to city planning while providing students with an opportunity to learn and practice leadership skills that can be applied across a variety of industries.

City of Fairfax, Virginia Mayor Catherine S. Read and George Mason University School of Business Dean Ajay Vinzé will sign a partnership agreement aimed at promoting economic growth in the city while giving students access to experiential learning opportunities that will benefit local businesses and students.

With some programs already underway and additional planning discussions on the horizon, both sides are looking forward to expanding the collaboration to programs that will include a vendor management experience for students in the Old Town Fairfax Business Association - OTFBA/FCED "Wander In" retail incubator, an in-store retail management experience, a site plan analysis for determining best use options of commercial real estate properties, and a study designed to improve business outcomes for small business federal contractors.

Attain Partners founder and CEO Greg Baroni and his wife, Camille, made a significant financial investment in the Center for Government Contracting within the George Mason University School of Business. The Baroni gift will allow the expansion of center research activities and student fellowships and contribute to a new space for convening.

The center will be renamed as the Greg and Camille Baroni Center for Government Contracting in honor of the new donors.

Yesterday, George Mason University announced the largest gift to a center within its School of Business from Attain Partners Founder and CEO Greg Baroni and his wife, Camille!

In honor of the new donors, the Center for Government Contracting will change its name to the Greg and Camille Baroni Center for Government Contracting. This will be the first donor-named center within the George Mason University School of Business.

“We are excited to partner with Mason to support and advance the government contracting industry,” said Greg Baroni. “Higher education is key to growing the industry and building diverse talent for tomorrow’s workforce. The 9th Annual Student Managed Investment Fund Consortium (SMIFC) Conference in Chicago at the Palmer House Hotel was another great success. This year, 50 colleges and universities were represented by 280 students and faculty who were treated to some fascinating insights by our speakers.

The competitions were close-run and congratulations to Lipscomb University, Kennesaw State University and George Mason University who won the poster competition. Congratulations as well to Hofstra University, Kennesaw State University (again), and Eastern Michigan University who won the Firm Performance Analysis competition.

Last week President/CEO Shelley Murphy had the opportunity to be a class instructor at George Mason University School of Business Fundamentals of Affordable Housing Development program. Shelley’s lecture focused on the importance of affordable housing to economic development, educational opportunity, racial equity, preventing homelessness, and more. Thank you GMU and Virginia Housing for partnering together on a program that will help develop support and talent for the affordable housing industry.

Emily Murphy, senior fellow at the George Mason University School of Business' Center for Government Contracting and former head of the General Services Administration, said Congress should reauthorize the SBIR program to ensure that the DOD and other federal agencies have continued access to critical technologies.
