Visiting Filmmakers Series at Mason

Visiting Filmmakers Series at Mason See your world differently. If you want to consider how images do their work, consider a minor in Film & Media Studies.

Images in movies, on television, and on the net move and inspire us, structure our ideas of race, class, gender, and sexuality, community and identity. The GMU minor in Film & Media studies explores mass culture in its visual manifestations and helps students develop an informed awareness of culture and media, ideological tendencies, and effects on daily experience. Committed to interdisciplinarit

y, the program addresses the increasing complexity and multiplicity of visual cultures and offers students the tools with which to read a variety of texts, including film, television, video, and new media. Most course work is offered through the Departments of Communication and English, with other courses available through the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, AVT, and Film and Video Studies. The two required courses provide an introduction to the languages of film and popular media and modes of analysis appropriate to each. They are prerequisites for all advanced work in the minor. Students select four additional courses designed to introduce a more specialized level of study. Students may decide to focus on film, television, or the study of mass culture, or they may choose some mix of courses that suits their interests.

Posted • The Board of Visitors (BOV) is the most powerful governing body at George Mason University.

In light of recent federal policy changes and threats to critical higher education programs, it is more important than ever to pay attention to those in power— starting here on our campus. The BOV is the most influential actor shaping our student experience at George Mason, and we must ensure our voice leads every discussion. Check out this guide to learn more.

These are our tuition dollars, this is our community, this our university.

Let the BOV know that we’re watching.

"Connection | Isolation" presents eight intimate portraits of trans and post-gender individuals navigating the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Amidst moments of connection and isolation, these participants reveal a deepening awareness of gender, their bodies, and trans community. Created by an all trans and q***r crew, this hybrid documentary film interlaces portraits with reenactments, integrating archival material documenting what so many experienced and many still do. "Connection | Isolation" witnesses the profound ways that, despite physical separation, trans community-building has been centered. This documentary invites viewers to witness the strength of connection as an act of resistance, offering care in the face of crisis, and using reflection as a path toward healing.
