GMU Phiotas Phi Iota Alpha (ΦΙΑ), established December 26, 1931, is the oldest Latino fraternity in existence. The Beta Chi Chapter of Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity Inc.

strives to achieve the following:

1. Promotion of personal, communal, and Pan-American development through the ideals of our Fraternal Pillars as well as other Pan-American intellectuals and their philosophies

2. Creation of a Latin American consciousness

3. Intensification of education with a Latin American character

4. Mobilization of Latin American communities

5. Conservation of the integrity of the Latin American character

Today, Phi Iota Alpha celebrates the birth of one of our Pillars: Don Jose Martí! Born in Havana, Cuba on January 28, 1853, Martí was a renowned poet, essayist, journalist, and revolutionary. Imprisoned at a young age for his anti-colonial views, he experienced firsthand the brutality of Spanish rule. Exiled to Spain, Martí continued his fight for Cuban independence through his powerful writings. He traveled extensively throughout Latin America, raising awareness of the Cuban cause and fostering Pan-American solidarity. Martí’s vision of a free and independent Cuba, free from both Spanish and American imperialism, continues to resonate today. His ideas of unity, justice, and self-determination remain a powerful inspiration for movements for social and political change across the globe.
