Let's celebrate the incredible legacy of Jane Delano, a pioneering nurse whose innovative patient care and leadership transformed the field of nursing. Delano held numerous prestigious roles such as President of the American Journal of Nursing's Board of Directors and the first chairman of the National Committee of the Red Cross Nursing Service. She also served as the superintendent of the Army Nurse Corps, where her relentless dedication and organizational skills helped recruit and train thousands of women as professional Red Cross nurses globally.

Jane Delano's impactful career didn’t stop at leadership; her practical contributions during medical crises like the yellow fever and typhoid epidemics showcased her forward-thinking approach to patient care. By World War I, her efforts led to the successful recruitment and training of over 18,732 nurses, crucial in treating the war’s injured soldiers and refugees. Even after the war, she continued to advance the nursing profession by establishing the Red Cross Town and Country Nursing Service and co-authoring essential nursing textbooks. Her tireless dedication remains an inspiration in nursing, reflecting her famous last words, "What about my work, I must get back to my work."

🎉 Meet your latest Jonas Scholar, Brianna Kline! 🎉 The Jonas Scholars program provides financial assistance, leadership development, and networking support to expand the pipeline of nursing faculty, researchers, and advanced practice nurses. 🩺

Brianna Kline, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC, AAHIVS, is a highly accomplished and board-certified family nurse practitioner and credentialed HIV specialist. She earned her BSN from the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor and her MSN from Madonna University. Brianna is now pursuing her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) at the University of Michigan-Flint, demonstrating her dedication to advancing her expertise and impact in the healthcare field.

In her role in public health in Detroit, Brianna excels in managing care for individuals with HIV and STIs. She is also deeply involved in significant research on antibiotic stewardship and STI screening methods. Her outstanding contributions have earned her the prestigious Distinguished Newcomer Award at the 2024 State of Michigan HIV/STI conference.

Brianna's passion for education shines through in her role as an adjunct nursing faculty member at Wayne County Community College District, where she inspires and equips future nurses. Her commitment to nursing academia is evident, and she plans to continue shaping the field through education.

As a proud 2024-2026 Jonas Scholar, Brianna is set to leverage the mentorship and support from Jonas Philanthropies to further her remarkable career. She is honored to represent the University of Michigan - Flint and looks forward to a future filled with continued contributions to nursing academia and research.

Last week we had the incredible opportunity of hosting our annual "Future Nurse Summer Camp," and we couldn’t be more thrilled with how it turned out!

Over the course of two days, our enthusiastic high school campers participated in a variety of engaging and educational activities. From crafting intricate clay models of human organs to learning about the profound impact of therapy dogs on patient care, the campers immersed themselves fully in the world of nursing and healthcare.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who played a part in making this camp a success. To our dedicated volunteers, students, and staff—your hard work and unwavering commitment have helped ignite a passion for nursing in these young minds. You have not only shared your knowledge but also your heart and dedication to the field of healthcare. 💙

Congressman Dan Kildee has announced $499,431 in federal funding to support the University of Michigan-Flint's sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) program, enhancing care for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence.

This grant will provide crucial training for nurses, ensuring comprehensive and compassionate care for survivors in rural and underserved areas across Michigan.

🌟 Future Nurse Summer Camp Day 1 Highlights! 🌟

We had an incredible kick-off to the first day of our Future Nurse Summer Camp here at the School of Nursing, University of Michigan-Flint! 🩺✨

From the warm welcome by Dean McCurren and an engaging Anatomy & Physiology icebreaker with clay anatomy, our campers dove right into immersive learning. 💡

Throughout the day, they embarked on exciting group activities like: 🔍 Escaping puzzles in our Nursing-themed Escape Room 🤖 Hands-on simulations with Nursing Anne 🚭 Educational sessions on the risks of Va**ng 🧼 Practicing Handwashing & Hygiene techniques 🚑 Learning Basic First Aid skills

Our lunch break turned into a thriving discussion with a student panel, where current nursing students shared a day in their life, inspiring future aspirations. 🍎📚

Post-lunch, the enthusiasm continued with more group assignments, and we deep-dived into: ❤️ Life-saving CPR training 🩸 Life-or-death Stop the Bleed workshop 📊 Vital Signs lecture & practice session. Finally, we wrapped up the day with an insightful discussion on hospice care by Diane Welker followed by shirt handouts. 👕

We're so proud of all our campers for their curiosity and energy today and can't wait for tomorrow’s adventures! 💪

🦷🩺 The Mission of Mercy event was a great success, providing services like cleanings, x-rays, crowns, and oral surgeries to hundreds of underprivileged individuals from Genesee County and beyond, including the Amish community, on June 14 & 15. Our dedicated volunteers, including UM-Flint School of Nursing students, conducted medical triage and partnered with a cardiologist to ensure safe treatment for patients with conditions such as hypertension. One patient was even referred to the ER for suspected diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).

Thanks to everyone's hard work and early mornings (wake up call at 4 AM!), we made a meaningful impact while honoring U-M's core values of respect, compassion, social responsibility, and excellence. Looking forward to the next opportunity to serve!
