While overall infant mortality rates have gone down in Michigan, the mortality rate for Black infants are still disproportionate with alarming rates in certain counties.

Programs like Rx Kids offers pregnant mothers economic support that can allow for better access to health care and stable housing. Assistant Professor Gayle Shipp explains how local and state resources focused on maternal and infant health can help address gaps in care.

Twelve of Michigan’s 83 counties with the highest population of Blacks reported higher death rates for babies in 2020-22.

Dr. Mona Hanna, Associate Dean for Public Health in the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, spent the morning on Capitol Hill meeting with Michigan lawmakers about the successful Rx Kids cash prescription program in Michigan and the CDC-funded Flint Lead Registry, which is hosted by the MSU College of Human Medicine.
