Josh Spencer, owner of Cafe Rhema and UM-Flint Theatre Alum, is championing a CASE fund today for Giving Blue Day.

When we asked him why Giving Blue Day is important, he shared with us:
"I have been passionate over the years to giving back to my community, building many new businesses in Flint, including Café Rhema, a project that is near and dear to my heart. In fact, I was able to add my theatrical flair into the design of the space and menu, and even include a performance venue with our Rhema Lounge space behind the café. The primary vision of Café Rhema is to offer a safe, alcohol free space for students to hang out, and a platform for local artists to advance their skills."

Last year's Giving Blue Day funds helped support Rachel Landes, a current Art Major with her “Down the Rabbit Hole” interactive art exhibit themed around Alice in Wonderland. Rachel was able to use the funds to physically construct and market the exhibit including interactive stations for children to engage with. And now we're only 2 days away from Giving Blue Day 2024!

With CASE Opportunity Funds, Art Faculty Rebecca Zeiss was able to support an Eastern Papermaking Workshop for students and the community to experience papermaking from beginning to end, from raw materials, to mixing pulp, pulling sheets, dying, and displaying the final products. Thanks to our efforts last Giving Blue Day, CASE Opportunity Funds supported a river clean-up event by awarding funds to current wildlife biology major Lauren Bishai. Lauren coordinated with Housing and Residential Life and other student organizations to execute the event in October 2023 and with the funding, was able to purchase enough supplies to support another clean-up event she plans to coordinate in the spring.
