Sarcoidosis (pronounced SAR-COY-DOE-SIS) is an inflammatory disease that can affect almost any organ in the body. It causes heightened immunity, which means that a person's immune system, which normally protects the body from infection and disease, overreacts, resulting in damage to the body's own tissues. The classic feature of sarcoidosis is the formation of granulomas, microscopic clumps of inf
lammatory cells that group together (and looks like granules, hence the name). In people in the United States, sarcoidosis most commonly targets the lungs and lymph nodes, but the disease can and usually does affect others organs, too, including (but not limited to) the skin, eyes, liver, salivary glands, sinuses, kidneys, heart, the muscles and bones, and the brain and nervous system. The disease can affect people of any age, race and gender. No one is sure what causes sarcoidosis. It affects men and women of all ages and races worldwide. However, it occurs mostly in people ages 20 to 40, African Americans, especially women, and people of Asian, German, Irish, Puerto Rican and Scandinavian origin. Symptoms vary and can occur in different parts of the body, depending on where the granulomas form. Most symptoms develop in the lungs, skin, eyes, and liver. Multiple body systems may be affected. Symptoms may come and go. This disease is often acute, but in some patients it is chronic, waxing and waning meaning; (Waxing = growing larger, Waning = getting smaller). THIS PAGE IS FOR ANYONE WHO HAS SARCOIDOSIS OR KNOWS OF SOMEONE WITH THIS AUTO-IMMUNE DISORDER. There's not a local support group in my area for people with Sarcoidosis and I'm in need of gathering information and contacts of people in the Flint and surrounding area with Sarcoidosis to come together and have discussions, encouragements, updates and create awareness to the communiites. So far, in April is Sarcoidosis month. THIS PAGE WILL BE UPDATED AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.
