We are sad to announce that Dr. Tony McGill, longtime lecturer in Communication Studies, passed away unexpectedly on February 7, 2024. Tony began teaching at UM-Flint in 1991, and retired as a Collegiate Lecturer Emeritus and Lecturer IV in January 2021 after 30 years of service to this campus. Tony was a beloved teacher and colleague, famous for his impact on students and his ability to connect our campus with businesses and non-profit organizations throughout the region. Tony was a specialist in Public Relations, Advertising and Small Group Communication, and placed hundreds of UM-Flint students in internships over his career.

In addition to being named Collegiate Lecturer in 2020, Tony received numerous awards and honors. These include the Provost's Innovation in Teaching Prize, and Community Leadership Awards from the City of Flint and Richfield Public Schools. GM Student Corps twice bestowed on Dr. McGill a "Powering Positive Change in Flint" award in recognition of hundreds of hours of volunteer hours to GM's premier paid internship program focusing on community service.

Upon his retirement, the Communication Studies faculty created the Tony McGill Outstanding Scholar in Communication Award to honor his lasting impact on student success. He will be deeply missed by his colleagues and untold numbers of students who took his courses.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Brighton, MI at a later date. For more information about Tony’s remarkable life and contributions, as well as for details on memorial donations in Tony’s name, please refer to his obituary.
